Effects of solar energy on the environment

The discovery of the sun as a renewable source of energy that can be used to produce electricity has been appreciated for many centuries for having a significant impact on the world’s life. However, it is rare to luck negativity in most things that have an advantage. As much as solar energy is advantageous, it still has limitations to the environment, therefore considered to be an environmental issue. The solar energy problem arose from the fact that it must affect people’s livelihoods and also the environment by occupying a lot of space and emitting harmful chemicals to the atmosphere.

One of these disadvantages is the leakage of harmful chemicals to the environment. The photovoltaic cells, which are used to convert sunlight to electricity, are made from a toxic chemical which causes harm if they are emitted to the environment. These chemicals are harmful to the plants growing and even to the humans if they happen to breathe in the substances. There are also some liquids used to transfer electricity from the turbines to the warehouse. Those chemicals used to make the drinks are harmful, especially if they leak to the environment. They can destroy the plants and make the air toxic.

Solar energy also affects the livelihood of people. Large solar power plants occupy a large space, and depending on the right position to plant it; people may be forced to vacate. Again, the place needs to be cleared for construction, causing the nearby trees and vegetation to be cut down. As a result, there is less rainfall, the area becomes hot and humid, and the soil is open for erosion.

Cutting down the harmful effects of solar energy may be quite hard. However, the US government works to put up laws that use to guide on where to dispose of the harmful chemicals. Also, the people working with solar energy are advised to always check on the cables to ensure that they do not leak.
