In today’s world, English is said to be the language of opportunities. It is the most widely spoken language globally and is spoken to some extent in almost every country in the world. Being fluent in English may open many windows of opportunities for English-speaking people. For this reason, more people around the world are learning it to enrich their lives. Although some people are opposed to learning English, in the modern world it is essential to learn English in order to progress in life in crucial aspects like one’s career, travel and entertainment.
Firstly, English is considered to be the language of business in the modern world. Knowledge of English is therefore integral to success in one’s career. Since English is the dominant corporate language for many international organizations around the globe it has become almost a necessity for people who seek to enter a global work force to communicate effectively in English. (1) All over the world, business communication and transactions between companies from varied countries who speak different languages is most often conducted in English. Global companies therefore expect employees to be fluent in English to enable them to compete well in the international markets. This means they need English speaking staff to establish international networks and increase their opportunities of getting better contracts and the best partners and clients throughout the world. (2) The importance of learning English for the international work place cannot be underestimated. The ability to communicate effectively in English opens up many career opportunities for an individual.
Secondly, speaking fluently in English allows one to travel easily anywhere in the world because it is an international language. English bridges the communication gap when travelling because people all over the world speak English. English is the official language of fifty-three countries globally and is spoken by four hundred million people as their first language and around two billion people speak it as a second language. (1) It is, therefore, essential for tourists and immigrants who come from countries that do not speak English to learn how to speak fluently in English. This helps them to move about easily in the country they are visiting. A good command of English enables travelers to ask for help, converse with other people and to have an active social life in the community they are visiting, allowing them to enjoy activities that are typical of the countries they are visiting. (2) Besides, knowledge of English allows people to learn about different cultures and gives them a better understanding of the people who live in English-speaking countries.
Thirdly, English is the dominant entertainment language in the world. This is because it is the international language of media and arts. (1) A good knowledge of English gives an individual access to all kinds of entertainment resources regardless of their interests and likes. In many countries across the world, music, science, arts and sports use English as either their primary language or secondary language of communication. In the modern age of information, English is the dominant language of the internet used in social media networks, in the World Wide Web, in the most significant websites and software manuals and guides. (2) Many of the world’s top movies and series, books, newspapers and music are published and produced in English.
In summary, speaking English fluently is an essential skill to have in today’s world despite some people not seeing the need to learn it. People who can communicate effectively in English have an opportunity of improving their lives by getting better career opportunities, traveling with greater ease across the world and getting access to good entertainment resources. People should learn English because learning English is useful in improving people’s lives and to benefit their performance in all aspects of life.
