Essay and objectives
My main objective is to become a highly professional English teacher. This objective will be attained through the learning of the culture of the students as we interact. In the process, I will be able to gain adequate skills that will enable me to be in an excellent position to interact with students from different cultural backgrounds as I will learn more about their culture. Through such interaction, I will be able to understand the needs of my students and be in a better position to develop effective strategies to deal with the identified needs.
My other objective of joining the FLTA program is to enhance my skills and proficiency in teaching English as I extend my knowledge of American society and the culture practiced in the country. This program will enable me to attain this objective as I will be able to interact with the people from the various communities. Through the interaction, I will be able to teach my native language to the numerous students that I will interact with the students from different schools in the country.
It is also my objective to learn the various teaching strategies used in the different schools in the United States and use the varied skills to enhance my teaching strategies back home. Through the program, I will learn how languages are taught in different schools, and this will improve my efficiency in the teaching process. Such skills will be beneficial in my country as it will enable me to elevate the teaching standards in my home country. This process will yield positive outcomes as the country has one of the best education systems in the world.
Teaching methodologies and techniques
If given a class to teach, I would use several teaching methodologies to teach my language to the students. One of the techniques which I would utilize is the grammar-translation method. Through this method, I would translate the various grammatical words, sentences, and paragraphs to the students. This method is one of the effective means of teaching a foreign language as it enables the students. The various principles utilized when using this teaching method. The use of grammar rules and the application of the language knowledge of the foreign language will enable the students to be in a better position to understand the sentence structures used in the foreign language and use such intelligence to understand the various parts of the sentences. This aspect will enable the students to understand the foreign language. Through the practice of the multiple words and phrases they master, they will be able to communicate as they translate the words in English. This method is the best teaching technique that I would prefer to use due to its simplicity in teaching and effectiveness in understanding a foreign language.
Also, I would utilize the direct method of language teaching as an alternative method of teaching. This process will involve the use of the native language as the primary medium of communication within the teaching session. During the sessions, I can refrain the students from using English and practice the native language after learning the basics of the foreign language. This method will enable the establishment of an immediate or direct association between their expression of the foreign language and their experience in using the foreign language as the medium of communication. In the process, I would utile the aspects such as demonstrations and dramatizations to explain the meaning of the English words, phrases, and idioms to enable the students to understand the meaning of the word as they practice expressing themselves through the use of the foreign language. This method will allow the students to directly learn the foreign language without using translations to obtain the meaning of the different words or phrases they use to communicate.
The other teaching technique I would use is the communicative language teaching technique. This process will involve the use of interactive sessions as the means and the ultimate study goal. The communicative approach enables the teacher and the students to engage in an interactive session, which will allow them to participate in the learning process using the second language as the means of communication and the mode of learning the new language. The communicative language is based on the fact that learning a new language is not based only on knowing the different vocabularies, pronunciation, and the rules of grammar but rather to enable the learners to use language in the various social contexts. In this case, the instructor should not utilize language only for formal aspects but also for the enhancement of communicative purposes as a means of functional interaction and socialization. This process will utilize the authentic texts which are written using the language being learned where the instructor will lead the learning process as they engage with the students in the learning process. The process can use English to explain the various concepts and to enhance the understanding of the different language concepts being taught. Through the use of the three methods, I would be able to teach my native language to the students with ease and effectively.
