Europe’s Age of Revolution
HI 223: Take-Home Final Exam
__________________________________________________________
Your paper should be about 5-6 substantial paragraphs long, or approximately 3-4 pages. It should contain a clear thesis answering the question, and make two or three major arguments in support of the thesis. Arguments should be supported by evidence drawn from lecture, the textbook, the French Revolution Game Book (particularly the primary sources), and Rousseau’s Social Contract. You are welcome to consult the Writing Center or the AAC to help you structure your thoughts or edit your paper for spelling and grammar, but the thesis and the writing must be entirely your own work.
Upload your completed final exam to NUoodle any time before 11:00am Tuesday, May 7th. Your final exam must be submitted in either .pdf or .docx format. Late exams or exams submitted in unreadable formats will receive a zero.
Based on what you know of the structure of the pre-revolutionary French state, the ideas of Rousseau and Burke, and the events of the French Revolution from 1789-1791,
Was the period of “Terror” 1792-1794 inevitable?
If yes, explain how violence was a necessary and inexorable outcome of the revolution’s goals and ideals. If no, explain where and why the revolution went wrong in trying to establish the principles of 1789. If you wish, you may draw comparisons with the less-chaotic American Revolution, but your major focus should remain on France.
