Experiences that have Prepared Me to Work with Underserved Populations
A more incredible passion and understanding of primary care significantly increased while working as a volunteer for a medically vulnerable community-based organization. It was a rewarding experience since, through the community service, I learned how to measure vital signs of a patient. Also, through interactions with regular external visitors, I had an opportunity to build trust and friendship with my contacts. However, my most memorable experience involves counseling and talking to community members regarding healthy lifestyle choices. Relatively, I am confident that my past experiences put me in a better position to serve the underprivileged.
It would be my great honor to offer community services or even help tribal populations because I have a handy practical knowledge gained from the organization. Underserved communities are vulnerable to many diseases that trouble them for a long time. Through the experience gained from my previous volunteer work, it will be easy for me to accurately measure and determine the infections existing among people in the affected communities or tribes based on the vital signs showed. The interaction experience in the medical organization allowed me to learn how to communicate with new people with diverse origins in the workstation. Also, the interaction made me learn how to socialize with people regardless of their status. The volunteer work enabled me to learn the procedures used in the guiding and counseling of people suffering from different diseases. Similarly, I was able to learn different diets that should be recommended for patients having a particular disease to ease their situations and shorten the recovery time.
