Feminism
The feminist interview was the most interesting thing that i have ever had. The person who I chose to interview was my friend Laura. There are many reasons that prompted me to choose her, including the fact that she has been my best friend since middle school, and we hold the same opinion in most on most things. I also did not want to spend much time and resources traveling for the interview, and hence chose her because she was easily accessible to me and convenient.
On the question of what is of feminism, she answered it by saying feminism “is wanting women to be treated the same or having equal opportunity as men- the range of political movements, social movements, and ideologies that usually have a common goal.” Laura further said feminism incorporates to prioritize men within the society, and for that reason, women are mistreated in the communities. I do agree with her answer. There is a need to fight gender stereotypes by establishing professionals fields that have equal opportunities for both women and men.
On the second question on if she had heard stereotypes about feminist or feminism, she answered by saying people think feminists are women who don’t shave their armpits and won’t let men hold the door for them. I strongly agree with her position. Feminist usually claim that gender stereotype is meant to place boundaries that prevent women from achieving their target. Gender stereotyping has been a common phenomenon in our society. For instance, children are brought up with different aspects of life, depending on their cultural background. Some traditions still hold male chauvinism and promote traditions that devalue females and their positions in society.
On the question, “Can anyone be a feminist?” She answered, “I think anyone should be a feminist.” Any person who supports equal opportunity for both men and women is said to be a feminist. I do agree with her. Anyone can become a feminist as long he/she campaigns for equal chances for both men and women. For instance, if men are to be paid high wages, women are not supposed to earn low wages. Equal opportunities enhance feminism in society. A person who has a strong stand for both women and men is the one to cultivate feminism.
When did I ask Laura whether she was a feminist? Why or why not? She answered, “I am absolutely a feminist.” As a woman, we must have some opportunities as men. My perception of this was accurate. All those years I had known her, she used to fight for equality. I could remember a scenario while in secondary school. The boys were supposed to select science-related subjects as girls chose social science. She proved this wrong when she decided to choose science subjects and performed well. The ideology on who to perform specific matter or activity usually increases feminism. Women need to fight for equal opportunities in society. Double chances need to be applied in all fields of work. If it’s a political seat being contested, lets them stand firm and campaign.
I also had to ask Laura if she thinks that men and women are treated equally, if not, or why not. She said, “I do think that men and women are treated equally. There is still a huge stigma that women are too emotional, and they do not belong in business or high position”. The fact that women and men are treated equally, I disagreed. For many years, women have proven to be fighting for gender equality. Nowadays, children have gained equal chances of education, but what about the access to jobs. In the job market, more men are employed than women. Although the women number is increasing, it can’t match that of men, a typical example of gender imbalance in society.
Given the opportunity to ask my question, I confidently asked her, “It has been said that there is a wage gap due to the fact that women are afraid to negotiate their salaries. How could feminism help prevent this type of issue?” she answered by saying there exist a gap. She included and said that women have the fear to negotiate salaries once they get employed. Some of their bosses do not support feminism. Once we all become feminists, we as women will always fight for our double chances with men. I was impressed by the way she responded however do not think that its all women who fear to ask for salary negotiations and equality in pay. I witnessed many women lead the war against inequality in pay and chair meetings that result in fairness in remuneration among genders think what is driving the fear is the social construction and some traditions that result in a belief in male dominance.
Finally, I had to ask her if she did find it useful to take part in the interview. She responded by saying, “yes, I am very glad I participated in this interview.” I liked her expression, and I had to thank her a lot for having participated. She was a good listener and time conscious.
In conclusion, if feminism is well cultivated, women will always have equal chances as men. There is a need for women to stand up and fight for these opportunities. Gender stereotypes should be avoided in society, for it enhances feminism. It’s important to have more feminists to advocate for equal chances in men and women. I believe that all people are created equal. We all deserve equal opportunities irrespective of one’s gender, by virtue of being human beings. Therefore, feminism is a power that needs to be nourished to flourish in the society, for equality
