Entropion and Ectropion are usually associated with aging, although they can also be caused by a scar tissue pulling your eyelid out of position. The goodness is that they are correctable conditions. It is normal for people to develop either of these conditions.
What is entropion and ectropion?
Entropion can be defined as a condition whereby your eyelids turn in, causing your eyelashes to rub against the cornea resulting in pain and watering eyes.
Ectropion is defined as a condition whereby your eyelids turn out, hence do not touch your eye, resulting in irritation, redness, watering, or dryness.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
The type of procedure that you will undergo is dependent on the condition of the tissue surrounding your eyelid and on the root cause. Before the operation, you will be given an anesthetic to numb your eyelid and the surrounding area. You may as well be sedated lightly to ensure you are comfortable.
Entropion
If your condition is age-related, the most probable remedy is removing a small part of your eyelid. This will make the affected tendons and muscles tight. This will be followed by a few stitches on your eye’s outside corner or beneath your lower eyelid.
If your condition is one where you have scar tissue on the inside of your lid, your surgeon will perform a mucous membrane graft using some tissue removed from your mouth roof or nasal passages.
Ectropion
If your condition is age-related, then your surgeon will extract a small part of your lower eyelid at the outer edge. Stitching the lid back together will make the muscles and tendons tight, causing the lid to settle correctly on the eye.
If your condition is caused by scar tissue from injury or initial surgery, then your surgeon will take a skin graft from your upper lid or behind your ear and use it. In a case whereby you have facial paralysis or significant scarring, you will have to undergo a second operation to rectify your Ectropion fully.
