Film Analysis: Blade Runner 1982
The 1982 film, Blade Runner, is directed by Ridley Scott and stars one of the best action actors of the 1980s, Harrison Ford. The film is set in a dystopian future that is set in the twenty-first century, whereby corrupt cooperation named the Tyrell Corporation focuses on the creation of advanced robots who look like humans. The film is science fiction of sorts, and it highlights the director’s vision of how the twenty-first century would have looked like and how human technology would have advanced in the years to come. Through the interaction and plot of the film, the themes of the film are well depicted. One of the major themes of the film is identity, which focuses on the advanced robots who are known as Replicants. They develop emotions, and a desire has an identity such that they start to rebel against their purpose of being created, as shown by Roy, who refuses to kill. The theme of class and society is also highlighted in the film. The dystopian world is highly technologized but has an underworld society where poor people live. The replicants created by the Tyrell Corporation serve as slaves while the cooperation, which is made up of the rich, is running the dystopian world.
The director of the film, Ridley Scott, explores the use of mise en scene to create a visual masterpiece that would go on to inspire countless video games and other pop culture references. The setting of the film helps the audience understand the narrative of the film better. As science fiction, the film is set in 2019 Los Angeles, which is 37 years into the future and shows a futuristic city with flying cars and fully technologized. The costumes also play a significant role in depicting some of the themes and complement the setting of the film. The actors are dressed in futuristic attire that helps the audience understand that the film is a sci-fi and is set in the future. In addition to this, the theme of the class could be understood through the clothes worn by the rich and poor are different. The rich members of the movie’s society are dressed in suits while the poor are shown to wear rugged clothes. The props of the film also play a huge role in complementing the setting ofc the film. The cars are uniquely designed to show the influence of future technology in the film. The design of the cars is different from the cars of the era the film was produced to emphasize the vision and interpretation of the director of the film concerning the future of the world and humanity in general.
The director of the film uses sound and sound effects to capture the attention of the audience to the film by exploring the sound made by different objects in the flying cars taking off. Also, sound in the film is used to add drama between characters in the film and the actions to anticipate. The use of long shots by the film’s director gives the audience a view of Los Angeles in the future after it has been technologized. Also, in the market scene, the long shot provides the audience with a chance to understand the theme of class better since one could see the poor in society from the shot. In this scene, the placement of the characters as they interact with each other helps to show this important theme. The lighting of the film is also an important aspect to note as the movie is dark and uses high contrast. The use of high contrast in scenes instead of bright colors helps to create mystery within the film and also to show the chaotic and hellscape that is Los Angeles in the dystopian future. Overall the film is exciting to watch as it highlights how people imagined the future and the twenty-first century.
