Final Reflection
Why study art?
I would approach this question based on an inspiration I received from a filmmaker Alan Parker. According to Alan Parker, “Art is the Oxygen that makes all the other subjects breathe.” It’s my opinion that art shouldn’t be sidelined in schools and should be right there in front of the other so-called “big subjects” because it teaches us how to deal with the world around us. Art encourages self-expression, builds creativity, increases confidence, and gives someone a sense of self-identity. It is said that an image has a thousand words, and to me, art makes someone see things in a thousand ways!
Studying art enables someone to learn about some critical times in history and understand how it was like to live in such times. The history behind different artworks enables students to learn about the nature of different tribes and their cultures. Additionally, it helps students to learn the transition of time in social, political, and economic contexts. Needlessly to say, art enables students like me to gather inspirations, and that eventually contributes to how they speak and analyze the world around them.
Takeaways
This class has made a significant impact on my academic life. The time was too short, but on a positive note, I take with myself some essential learnings and facts about art. First, I understood that there are around 25 art movements in history that have thrilled the artistic world from generation to generation. I also now know almost half of the artists in those art movements. I am more than joyous to learn about Leonardo Da Vinci. I’ve seen his artwork, such as the Monalisa and the Last supper, but until now, did I confirm that the two famous artwork is truly his.
Through the discussion forum, I have learned that developing and acknowledging ourselves through different perspectives is a vital skill that should be carried over to every aspect of my life. For instance, when learning about Surrealism, we had to analyze the “Two Fridahs” artwork by Frida Khalo. By learning through other analysis of the work, I began to realize the most important traits and techniques that I am thriving art a skill that I think would be useful in every bit of my life.
