Food waste is a worldwide problem

Food waste is a worldwide problem that needs to be tackled to ensure availability of food is not taken for granted. Numerous people are suffering from hunger in most third world countries. The narrator regrets his childhood and early adulthood behaviors whereby he could not complete his food. He also regrets having spent most of his life littering without thinking of the consequences. The narrator in the video requests the audience to have a change in mentality if they want to succeed in defeating the waste product issue. By describing how Michael Jordan helped in changing the baldness mentality, he proclaims his belief that human beings can have a change in mindset. Changing mindsets is what he describes as the key problem solver in waste maintenance and reduction. Waste products raises a lot of concerns but the narrator is hooked on discussing farm waste produce. He discusses on the need to change of behavior due to environmental concerns associated with waste disposal.

The narrator starts by explaining the various ways in which the farm produce ends up being referred to as waste. From the harvest point to the market place about 40 % of the produce is referred to as waste. The shelf-life for many farm produce is limited and thus other farm produce becomes waste before reaching the table. The remaining waste arises from the table remains after little consumption. The suggestions for catering for reducing the amount of waste produce is also mentioned. There is the option of using GMO produce but that cannot completely cater for everyone. GMO produce are noted to have more shelf-life than other produces thus reducing the expiry rate. GMO is also not favored by many consumers as people tend to believe that it may have adverse side effects. However, the narrator explains of the changes in technology that have proven that the food is far from harmless.

The narrator then goes ahead and gives an example of tomatoes in India that can last up to 45 days. He also mentions a choice of consuming ugly produce that are still as sweet and nutritious as the good looking ones. Consequently, he notes that it is difficult for people to adjust to such requests due to their natural tendencies of buying attractive produce. In dealing with such issues, he explains that the mindset is vital and requires adjustments. The third option was to increase greenhouse production in the cities to reduce the distance covered for delivery. Distance reduction ensures earlier delivery of fresh produce making them last more than those from distant areas. However, greenhouse products are more expensive than normal farm produce but nevertheless affordable. Changing mentality and mindsets is his key emphasis on adjusting to his suggested methods of solving the waste produce issue.

His slow way of speech allows everyone to digest his ideas and think of them while he is still talking. The narrator uses slides to illustrate his ideas to the crowd. He also uses his arms to describe his ideas. The narrator allows the audience to acknowledge what he is discussing but he gives minimal chance for an active response. He moves from place to place across the podium to get a better view of the audience. The narrator also observes the audience reactions to his statements thus he replies to the unconscious reactions received. For instance, he replies to the crowd’s unconscious reaction when describing his young adulthood habits of throwing food cans and bottles outside the window. By mentioning that he regrets his actions, he expects the crowd to sympathize with him unconsciously.
