My movie of preference is Freedom Writers; it is a movie that narrates the real story behind the origin of the Foundation of Freedom Writers by Gruwell Erin. He was a tender, aggravated teacher in the center of a racially volatile and divided school that is located in Los Angeles, in California, teaching pupils who were regarded as hard to explain. The administration and system of the school lost their hope on these high-risk teenagers who majorly concentrated on attaining the age of sixteen than thinking of graduating their high school due to the increased activities related to gang and death in the nearby areas. Education was not considered precedence as it was hard for them to understand what the need for acquiring knowledge is, yet you won’t live long enough to utilize it.
Without support from her contemporaries and the administration, she decided to take into consideration what these children are attempting to pass, and educate them in accordance to their wants; not per directives of the administration. She decided to pay for her books besides the allocated curriculum that narrated stories of person pupils are capable of speaking about. She proceeded to buy journals to every student to commence to write independently of the life they were conversant with, and they lived in, by letting them understand their personal lives mattered a lot. Her investment towards these pupils offered a safe-haven for a higher number and a connector between the perspective of racial divergent. It assisted them in knowing the manner of appreciating every individual as they are, regardless of their skin color.
The majority of pupils in her class had already understood at least a single ally who lost his/her life in the violence of gang-related. A significant fraction also knew two or more that died in the destruction of gang-related, and they feared that they would suffer the same thing next. The act of graduation was hardly ever on their minds having known that they won’t live to see it. With the faith and support in these students, providing them an opportunity they would not have been familiar to anything otherwise, Erin had the tribute of going through with all her freshman pupils to higher year and saw them graduate high school.
Coaching Implications
Coaching has a diverse definition, in accordance to the ICF Code of Ethics (2015), it is defined as “working together with customers in an encouraging and innovative procedure that motivate them to raise their professional and personal aptitude” (p. 1). Whether Gruwell understood it all not, she was born to be a coach. Her faith in becoming a teacher and her pupil commenced a long time before she first entered the classroom. Whenever the administration criticized her eagerness for being the first to make a difference in the lives of these children, it never despised her or influenced her negatively to continue with her innovative techniques. To attain these children’s where they are, not where the school and the administration though they are supposed to be.
There are numerous messages present in our globe, sub-cultures, and culture that guide us on the methods and places we are supposed to be and how we should be. No wonder a significant fraction of persons find themselves lost and not necessarily sure where to turn to. When a coach, in this situation a teacher, takes his or her time to listen and permit fullness of every personality to guide in the way that is conversant with what is better known within students. Instead of all messages that are appearing to them from without, encouragement to proceed forward takes place.
Erin focused and with objectives, developed a relationship with her fellow pupils, and came up with contracts that narrate the duties of both she and her pupils (ICF, 2015). She organized a field trip on a particular weekend with her fellow students if the class met specific standards. She also introduced new things they had never experience in their lives before, but she did not hand it to them; Erin anticipated they get involved in an active portion in the process of attaining point B from point A. By performing in that manner, the pupils were motivated and encouraged to raise money for the costs of transport of the one who hid Anne Frank, a survivor of the Holocaust, to give audience to their class. Finally, she rejected the term hero because, to her, she just did what was supposed to be done.
Professional Implications
I am a fan of this movie; I love it for several reasons; the faith Erin had for her fellows is astonishing. How far could our world be if a large percentage were like her? Looking at the children as a solution that seeing them as a problem. This applies to all individuals, specifically the heartbroken ones those that have undergone most significant adversity. The failure to view other individuals as they are apart from their trouble will frequently fail them.
Secondly, this movie gives me a very personal chord, watching things that can take place when our words are taken into consideration by specific individuals; it is empowering and motivating. Every individual, terms, or story matters; we were not created by God to experience hardships of this life. We all have a purpose of living.
