Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys
I watched a live music performance by Alicia Keys, and the song was “Girl on Fire.” A lively group of instrumentalists and vocalists at the stage took off the concert, welcoming Alicia when she showed up on stage in a beautiful yellow outfit of a skirt and a crop top. Moments later, after she began singing, she was joined on stage by his two male dancers. They were dressed in black suits, broken by red ties and white shirts. They danced alongside Alicia as they occasionally roamed the stage in fast and energetic dance moves. It was also evident in their dance moves how they dramatized the lines that Alicia sang, even following the song’s rhythm.
The concert venue was one Ed Sulivan Theatre that is popular for live concert presentations by a wide range of artists. The theatre usually is home to David Letterman’s late show. There was a fairly broad audience, of all gender, who was highly thrilled by Alicia’s performance. They exuberantly responded and easily connected with Alicia’s performance as they sang along. The theatre was well lit with less flashy lights, giving it a more unobstructed visibility of the activity on stage even as the band vocalized as well as Alicia and his two dancers performed.
The song “Girl on Fire” considers the theme of feminism. The theme is clearly illustrated by how the lines in the song talk about a girl’s world, with her feelings altogether. It is therefore specific and directly applies to a “girl,” as Alicia intended it to focus on feminism. It depicts a girl’s mood of celebration and happiness. The theme also explains the confidence in the gender of female and asserts the mood of gladness in performance. Alicia, being a female artist, enforces the self-esteem that females should have.
The theme of feminism in Alicia’s song helps portray women’s empowerment in that they can undertake challenges to improve their lives. Feminism as a theme helps explore a woman’s world to understand their day to day lives and how they can conquer. It farther exhibits the challenges surrounding a woman’s life. It is therefore well discerned that though a woman may have moments of excitement, they have suppressing moments and hence need to be accepted in the social space.
Alicia also points out in her song that though she is a “girl on fire,” she is also lonely. She elaborates on the feeling a woman may have despite the psych for being jubilant. Loneliness may be due to a situation in which one feels isolated. One goes through challenges alone with no one to share with nor look upon for comfort. Loneliness may also be viewed from the perspective of merely lacking a partner. When isolation is seen in the context of love, one requires a partner, whether male or female, to share their feelings and spend time. Alicia points out in her song that even though she is lonely, she will stand firm and unable to overcome the feeling. She decides that the feeling of loneliness will not bring her down; hence she will celebrate as she is on fire.
The artist also stages her stand that tough she is a lonely girl; people do not notice since she disguises and shuns it off by getting jovial to wade off her worries. She is the kind who will not allow herself to be put down by any situation whatsoever. She makes it real and helpful to society to realize that women are strong and resilient, and even though they go through challenges, they can overcome by standing firm and making the decision of not letting distraction pull them down. For her, the distraction was the loneliness that she sought to overcome by consenting to her positive mood, allowing her excitement to carry her above her negative feeling.
