Abstract: High rate of pollution is experienced in the world in the high number of industrial processes. Pollution can be considered to be negative externalities because it affects individuals who do not take part in transactions that are conducted between producers and consumers. The government improvises various externalities to ensure a conducive environment that is free from pollution is achieved.
Government Policies on Reducing Pollution
Negative externalities are experienced by a third party from transactions or operations conducted on a specific product or occurrence of an activity in which they are not involved. There are implementations that the government has set to externalize such occasions that affect third parties. The industrial development that has been experienced in the world has resulted in the high rate of pollution that has affected human life. There has been a need for government to put up measures that will reduce the rate of pollution experienced in the world. There are measures that government improvises in ensuring a safe environment is created and contribute to creating a safe world.
One of the policies that a government can use in reducing the rate of pollution produced by the combustion of carbon is imposing a tax. The idea of this policy is to make consumers and producers accountable for pollution that is caused by emissions that are produced by the machine they use. In such a case, a social marginal cost that is improvised in making a product is higher than a private marginal cost. The difference between the two costs is the amount of tax imposed on the production of the product. The advantage of this policy is that the government can make income from the taxes imposed on products produced in the region (Trebilcock, 2014).
Another strategy that government improvises in reducing pollution experienced in a particular region is coming up with subsides. These are alternative methods that can be devised in providing a solution without using methods that facilitate pollution. For example, the government can develop solar to provide power instead of using diesel generators (Sadler, 2020). In instances where solar is improvised as a source of energy, it is advantageous because it is an economical method of producing power.
Regulation is another strategy that the government uses to reduce the rate of pollution experienced in the country. These are measures set by the government to reduce the amount of pollutant emission experienced in the region. According to Dhami, regulation is one of the effective measures improvised by the government because it involves setting goals that are worked on, and the government ensures that they are achieved (Dhami, 2019). The main disadvantage with regulation is that they are hard to implement and put them in action in some instances.
Conclusion
Pollution is one of the factors that have contributed to climatically change experienced in the world whereby global warming is increasing rapidly. This issue has led the government to develop measures that can be improvised in regulating the rate of emissions experienced every day. The imposition of production tax is one of the methods that the government is devising. Another strategy improvised to reduce pollution is coming up with alternatives that will be used rather than combustion of fuels. The setting of regulation is another method that the government uses to reduce the rate of pollution.
