Case study: Halima and Brad
Halima is a 20-year-old woman from Somalia who arrived in Australia 5 years ago with her father and brother. Her mother died when she was 10 years old.
She met her 35-year-old Australian husband, Brad at TAFE 3 years ago. They married 2 years ago and they now have an 18-month old son.
You are a social worker at a community support centre and Halima has come to ask for financial support.
Halima tells you they are struggling financially since her husband had a back injury and can no longer work in his role as warehouse supervisor. They are on Centrelink benefits and Halima says she has no money for food for the family and their next payment is not for two more days.
During your initial interview, Halima also becomes quite distressed and says she is having flashbacks to the conflict she escaped in Somalia and is not sleeping well.
She tells you her father has not accepted her marriage to an Australian man and she is estranged from him, although sometimes meets with her younger brother in secret. Halima also sobs that she feels very isolated and wishes her mother were alive and able to support her.
