Have you ever imagined your life without a father?

Have you ever imagined your life without a father? Have you ever wondered how your son’s life would be if you, as a father, were missing? Well, these are just some of the many questions evident in Christopher Barcon’s article “Dear Dads: Save Your Sons”(Bacorn, C. N. (1992). It is exciting how people see father figures and, on the contrary, sad that one could be a father but not a dad. Everyone can be a father, but it takes more to that to be a dad. The article is so definite on the relevance of fathers in children’s lives, more so sons, to be precise. In his article, Barcon addresses a son, 15years old, whose dad abandoned him four years ago. The son has since been parallel with ethical conduct, involving himself in dangerous gangs, alcohol, and drug-taking, rampage, and even a significant drop in his studies(Bacorn, C. N. (1992). Having psychological experience, Barcon, attending to the boy, noted that the gap in the boy’s life was a father.

As a generation, we are losing on father figures, and so are our sons. This article is meant to remind us of the importance of fathers in our lives, and this is evident from the title: “Dear Dads: Save Your Sons.” I am rationally for this idea because it is a real-life issue that I encounter, and as well his analysis has been fundamental in my writing. Addressing your concerns to your father would be more comforting and relieving than just any random person, be it a psychologist.

Firstly, a father is more to just a profession. That explains why it would be almost impossible to be convinced about the father figure by a psychologist. Children need to feel the presence of their fathers physically. Yes, there could be a father figure in terms of an elder sibling, a teacher, mentor, but still, a father proves worth.

The fact that the fifteen-year-old boy is engaging in mischief means he lacks someone who can take charge in terms of guidance and discipline. Research has shown that a home with a father figure is so beneficial and such a determining factor in children’s lives. In this case, children having their fathers directly involved in their day to day activities have a 70% chance of completing their studies(Father Factor in Education 3). A child close to a father has a high probability of succeeding in matters education, a level that they will achieve due to guidance and peace of mind.

Additionally, success in education will tend to come with a need to achieve more in terms of secondary activities. And sports happens to exist on every boy’s mind. Like discipline and education, co-curricular activities are just as important. Sadly, these can barely be mentored in a son by a mother. The fact that they require more energy implies there has to be a man, at least. Unfortunately, the absence of one means most probably a talent might go to waste somewhere due to a lack of nurturing.

However, there have been separated families, in which sons have prospered despite lacking a father figure, and those complete families where sons have still perished. This shows that giving two parents to a child does not automatically prove his success. Hence, it is on us to always try to find our refuge in whichever figure that suits an individual better.

Finally, it is evident in the studies that children who get to experience their fathers end up developing well both mentally, psychologically, and physically. It is, therefore, advisable that fathers revisit their schedules and go back to the drawing board. However, we are left wondering, are we, as fathers, ready to get out of our comfort zones to go and take care of our families how in the best way? Why don’t we have time for our families?
