Health Information Management

Today, technology plays an integral role in our everyday lives. Healthcare, in particular, has had the full effect of informatics that has permeated into much of what happens in all areas of the hospital. The system helps keep patients’ records in a database to allow health professionals easy access to better patient care, health care policies, and institutional management. The Health Information Management (HIM) traditional role differs from its emerging role in various ways. For instance, they are similar in that they facilitate collecting accurate health data to minimize medical errors. However, the difference lies in health information professionals. Traditionally, they were responsible for all factors involved in this system, including planning, collecting, analyzing, and disseminating individual patient data. However, its emerging role creates more job opportunities and expands its roles and skills to broaden HIM’s traditional authority line.

I believe that the emerging roles are beneficial to the profession since they help them build new skills. Furthermore, possession of these skills is important as they help professionals in career advancement. Also, they assist in the decision-making process in hospitals, thus contributing to better health care for everyone.

Technology is constantly evolving, which means that health care is too. I think that the HIM profession will be taken more seriously five to ten years from now than it is right now. Moreover, professionals will have to undergo thorough training to understand how to manage the system to reduce medical errors and hospital lawsuits. Therefore, their roles will be much more evident in future years.
