Health Promotion in Infant and Family

The improvement of the health of both infants and families is a global health goal. Infant and family health promotion predicts future challenges in healthcare systems, societies, and communities. Health promotion requires that current problems be addressed adequately. Infants are exposed to certain health risks, some of which are highly contagious and communicable, exposing their families to such risks. Therefore, promoting health in infants also demands interventions that safeguard a family from any health complications. Healthcare quality, maternity care, and other environmental factors affect health promotion strategies in infants and families.

Health promotion services are delivered to families and infants through several models. The information can be provided to parents through audio-visuals or written flyers, demonstrations, or discussions of behaviors that promote health in families. Role modeling, especially in parent groups, is another avenue of channeling such information to the public. Besides, raising awareness in communities about these health promotion strategies in the city is another mode of transmission of this information, according to the World Health Organization.

The elements of health promotion for infants and families can be divided into four core elements; prevention of diseases, health education, community building, and supporting parents or caregivers to boost their confidence and assurance.  Prevention of diseases, illness, or injuries is a primary component of infant and family-health promotion interventions. Some strategies for disease prevention are vaccinations, immunization, proper breastfeeding and nutrition, oral surveillance, among others. These methods should blend with adequate monitoring of infants to aid early detection, intervention, and prevention of ill health in infants and families.

Health education, specific skill development is a useful strategy in the promotion of health in infants. Structured breastfeeding support has shown massive significance in increasing breastfeeding rates in infants, especially in the first two months. Infant and family health nurses engage in providing breastfeeding support due to its importance in promoting the health of the infant, boosting immunity, which keeps certain infections away from the infant and family. Other interventions for health interventions include physical needs and emotional needs provision, tantrum management, and sleep expectation management.

Support for fathers, mothers, or carers is another aspect of health promotion in infants and families. This valuable support increases the confidence of parents and a reassurance that the infant will successfully manage transitional health complications during development.  Maternal health is a critical issue in favor of mothers. Some mothers have problems breastfeeding, due to pain in nipples or inadequacy of milk. This is likely to affect the infant’s development; hence, doctor advice should be sought. The development of the infant also depends on the commitment of the father to the wellbeing of the infant and family.

Community capacity building focuses on the adequacy of resources, the sustainability of partnerships and networks, and the development of problem-solving techniques. Such interventions include workshops, education activities, and organizational involvement to promote health education and resources for infants and families. Therefore, it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure proper health for infants and families. This may reduce infant mortality rates due to better healthcare services.
