HESI Results and Remediation Packets

Nursing practice is one of the essential activities in the healthcare sector.  It contributes significantly to the health status of people, especially by engaging in evidence-based practice. While studying nursing, HESI exams help to assess and identify the strengths and weaknesses of nursing students to help them find ways to improve on their weaknesses. In the past HESI assessment, I had a score of 787 marks. From the score and results of the HESI exams, I realized that there are some areas that I need to work on. Therefore, I need to develop better strategies by reflecting on my weak areas and improve on them in my future patient care simulation and clinical assessments.

In this week, I covered various remediation packets, which can help me to improve in my areas of weakness. I need to prepare myself by conducting research before engaging in any clinical assessments. I also need to familiarize myself with the clinical assessments before participating in such activities. Gaining familiarity will enable me to identify my weak areas in advance and allow me to improve on them. The paper covers a summary of the remediation packets covered in the week. In then highlights the areas of weaknesses and strengths as per the HESI results. Finally, the paper reflects the recommendations that I will undertake to improve on my areas of weakness.

Evidence-Based Practice

In nursing, evidence-based practice is one of the strategies that nurses use to pinpoint and identify the specific care policies to undertake in helping their patients. It is defined as a step by step problem-solving approach that utilizes the best evidence from specific studies that identify the patient preferences and expertise of medical practitioners in making decisions about the care that a patient should receive (Dobson and Dobson, 2018).  The whole approach of care is patient-centered.  The evidence-based approach increases the knowledge base of a nursing student and also helps students to become accountable in their professions.

Most nursing institutions offer and teach nursing students on how to use the approach while providing patient services. The programs emphasize utilizing critical thinking and skills, which enable the student to assess and consider the clinical, cultural, religious, and social backgrounds of the patient as well as incorporating scientific research. Evidence-based practice has various benefits in the nursing sector. It helps to improve patient outcomes. By focusing on increasing the level of quality care that patients receive increases the health outcomes for the patients. The approach encourages the use of current health research, and therefore, it helps to reduce the complications that may come with chronic diseases.

The approach is also advantageous in that it helps to lower the cost of care among people living with chronic health conditions. Evidence-based practice reduces unnecessary costs that are associated with the treatment process of patients with chronic diseases. Finally, the approach helps in providing superior nursing skills by incorporating nursing education and clinical expertise with the use of critical thinking mechanisms to offer quality services. The approach also uses informatics and shares information with other interdisciplinary team members—such a kind of approach aids in providing efficient and quality patient-centered services.

Quality Improvement in Healthcare

In nursing practice, quality improvement healthcare refers to the provision of appropriate and standard services (Al-Abri & Al-Balushi, 2014). it includes the unity of all the relevant departments working together to achieve a common goal of providing standard services to the patients. In Quality improvement healthcare, there is continuous assessment, monitoring, and keen observations aimed at improving the standards of healthcare. Quality improvement has relationships with patient satisfaction, improved efficiency, and better outcomes (Al-Abri & Al-Balushi, 2014). A quality improvement program in a health facility has to incorporate relevant principles of quality improvement to improve performance and become successful in the provision of health services.

For nurses to achieve quality in the provision of health services, nurses can consider working together as systems and processes to understand their service delivery processes. Such a strategy will help in streamlining input and output processes to achieve the objectives of quality service delivery. Quality improvement focuses on meeting the patient’s needs; therefore, a good system should focus on the patient through the provision of patient safety, patient engagement, and evidence-based care (Al-Abri & Al-Balushi, 2014).  For nurses to improve the quality of service they offer to their patients, they should rely on available data that describes the workability of the right systems and provides an opportunity for comparison to ensure continuous improvement.

By utilizing quality improvement strategies, healthcare services will be safe, effective, and patient-centered. It will also reduce the extra costs that patients have to incur, which are associated with poor outcomes and errors.

Informatics Technology in Nursing

It is the use of electronic devices to collect information electronically from patients. Nurses in health informatics have the responsibility to manage, interpret, and communicate the relevant information that they receive from healthcare facilities using informatics (Hunt et al., 2013). Many areas in the healthcare field currently use informatics to analyze patient records and help in preparing appropriate patient interventions. The use of informatics technology in health care plays critical roles that improve the level of quality of care offered to patients.

The use of informatics helps to improve documentation, which a vital activity in healthcare delivery. The historical patient needs to offer a guideline to modern healthcare and service delivery. Collecting information using electronic means helps to organize and store patient data in a way that enables easy and faster access (Hunt et al., 2013). By using electronic means to document patient information, nurses can electronically share such information and manage patient care, which improves the quality of care that patients receive.

Patient safety is one of the concerns that any healthcare provider has to focus on. Nurses have to ensure that they prevent medication and diagnosis errors to reduce risk issues in inpatient care (Hunt et al., 2013). Health informatics plays a key role in providing significant data that reduces errors. For example, electronic records can show how a patient responds to certain medications. With sufficient data, nurses can make better decisions to enhance the safety of their patients.

Reflection and Recommendation to Improve on Weak Areas

From the HESI assessment, I have realized that I am weak in assessments, health informatics, math, and various concepts of evidence-based practice. For me to improve in these areas, I will have to engage in simulation-based training to enable me to model my clinical events in a safe environment. Simulation-based training will equip me with various critical thinking skills, problem-solving strategies, and enable me to know to collaborate with other disciplines in clinical studies to advance my knowledge (Hamstra et al., 2014).  The use of this strategy helps students to increase their knowledge in making appropriate clinical judgments and mastery of clinical various nursing concepts.

The other strategy to make changes in my weak areas is through participation in various workshops that offer training in nursing and medical issues. While participating in these workshops, I will have an opportunity to discuss and ask as many questions based on concepts that I am weak in. I will gather relevant information that will act as a basis for my further research in these areas. Participation in workshops will allow me to develop better decision-making skills and know-how to engage in interprofessional communication. With these skills, I will be able to seek more information and help from other people.

By focusing on my weak areas, I will find fellow students who performed better in my weak areas. I will dedicate my time to consult them and ask them to assist me in gettering a better understanding of the concepts. I will also create time to participate in various clinical practices before the time of assessment. Such practices will allow me to get sufficient practice and gain mastery in various nursing concepts. By maintaining a high level of discipline and focus in my area of weakness, I will make significant improvements, which will make me be a better nurse in providing efficient and effective services.
