Introduction

Surf music has a close association with the subculture. The surf culture deals with human beings, their language, as well as their lifestyle about sports modern Surfing, is a product of the influence of the initial perception. The birth of surf music dates from the 20th century from where it began to evolve (Warren, & Gibson, 2014).  Surf music branches from rock music, which is principally practiced in the southern parts of California. Its popularity dates between the years 1962 and 1964, and it was made up of two primary forms: instrumental surf and vocal surf. Dick Dale and Del Tones are the introducers of the instrumental surf, a music that is outstanding as it evokes crashing waves’ sound. The surf sound was a product of the instrumental rock. A band of the beach boys upgraded the instrumental surf to vocal surf by making additions of vocal harmonies to it. Vocal groups played a vital role in making the surf music known nationwide.

Evolution of Surf Music

The 1950s marks the era in which the surf music came to be known to the people. Its form during the emergence was instrumental rock and roll music. Its beat was 4/4 and a tempo that ranges between medium and fast (Weigold, & Treise, 2004). The “wet” spring reverb was used to make an electric guitar that imitated waves’ sound. This made it possible to produce tonal orientation that was spirited in nature. To reduce the notes’ pitch, the guitarists put in use the vibrato arm. In the initial days of the 1960s, instrumental rock and roll were in the move. With many artists enjoying the music to the better level of their heart’s nourishment. People from all sides of the world gained interest in the music as it became widely established. Bands from Europe were explicitly carried by the moves made by the instrumental players from the British colony (Lawler, 2010).  Later in the years, this music was developed to vocal surf by beach boys who made it more recognized to countries from around the globe. The initial surfing sound was revived to surf punk in the end days of the year 1970s and early days of the 1980s. Canadian forgotten rebels are among the groups that were involved in the revival.

Cultural Space

Surfing and music are very much related. Music existed years before the emergence of contemporary Surfing, where it created an environment that best suited the surf culture. During the 1960s, the invention of surf music happened in California; the modern generation was stimulated too by the beach boys to embrace surf music. These surf boys were excellent at influencing the community to like surf music in the Californian population. With time, surf music was spread across borders where they got adopted by surfers from Australia and Europe (Engle, 2015).  The instruments that the surfers used included the saxophone, pianos, and guitar. To support the different cultural articulations, the music industry is flooded with surf singers.

Mostly, as the name suggests, Surfing has been done on the beaches. These are the most serene locations to have fun as one socializes with family and friends. These songs are done about the waves, and this makes it an attractive setting for them with no beach around no surf song. Countries with beaches have remained the best destination to perform surf music. For instance, history records seven festivals done on European shores. The reason for which surf music was made along the beaches is that beaches provide a conducive climate that suits artistic works. People are in a better position to enjoy music to the fullest when in a relaxed beach climate. From a long time ago, Europe has been the best destination where Surfing has been taking place. Other destinations for Surfing include Hawaii and Indonesia, not forgetting Australia. Concentrating on Europe, the best sites include Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland, and the UK. All these places offer the best environments for the artists to perform as well as for the holiday guest to nourish their hearts.

Parental Culture

Many parents use surf music as a way to keep their family have and moving. They organize for holiday camps where they can break the monotony of remaining indoors with their young ones. Historically, Hawaii has been severally visited by families with different enjoyment desires. Surf song has been sung to the young generation to remind them of the need to appreciate nature. Churches, which act as spiritual parents, do take their members for Surfing.

An example is a church in Huntington Beach, California, which is recorded to have been taking its members to the beach for breaking boredom and interacting in a more serene environment (Farmer, 1992). This act makes other communities gather with the church as they surf; this way, the mores get tough in the process, and cultural acceptance sets in. Parenting is, to a high degree, assisted by the teaching of surf music.

In conclusion, surf music has had a good sense of origin. Due to the availability of young people who were eager to do Surfing, surf music was carefully propagated around the world — surf music branches into instrumental rock and roll music and vocal surf. European countries are best known to have the best locations where Surfing takes place. Surfing is an excellent way to influence the parenting or the growth of the young generation (Blair, 1978). It enhances rituals which help build the culture of the people.
