History of the memory foam mattress
Introduction:-
Memory foam is a type of foam that changes its shape according to the force that is applied to it. NASA made it in the 1960s to reduce the number of casualties and injuries sustained by passengers and crew during crashes of planes and space craft’s; however, they were ineffective, but they had found another use. NASA made some deals and sold the methods to make memory foam to various companies. So memory foam became widespread in the mattress industries with first being used in hospitals.
Process of Making:-
- Several agents combine with isocyanates and polyols.
- A machine first mixes them all and then pours them into a mold in which it takes its foam form.
- Gas is then added to it to make the foam flexible.
- The foam is first cooled to room temperature, then again heated and left in the open for a few days.
- The foam is then washed to get rid of impurities and then inspected by experts to ensure a good standard.
- It is then cut into pieces to be used in various applications
- Many layers of polyurethane are applied to the bottom side of memory foam.
- The memory foam is then attached to the top of them with the help of many adhesives.
Use in Hospitals:-
Memory foam is used a lot in hospitals and other facilities where treatment of injuries is done or where people are taken to let their injuries heal. The people who are in casts due to broken bones cannot move even a bit, so to ensure they are comfortable and their wounds heal properly, and parts of their body don’t hurt due to being under constant pressure, they are given memory foams. These foams will deform under pressure and take the shape that offers the most comfort to the patient.
Use in Seats:-
Memory foams are also extensively used in cars because of the long traveling time’s people are stuck to their seats and so need maximum comfort. So they are beneficial as they allow people to drive comfortably and for a longer time without any pain to their backs. Chairs such as gaming chairs mostly use memory foam; this enables people to comfortably sit and use their computers for a long time with ease and work for longer hours. These chairs are also popular in work environments due to the amount of comfort they provide.
Use in Therapeutic Devices:-
In therapeutic devices, memory foam is used to provide comfort to the patient. Disabled people spend 80% of their time sitting in their wheelchairs, and this puts tremendous pressure on their back to alleviate this memory foam wheelchair are used.
