How I Developed Interest in Capital Markets and Risk Management
Right from my childhood, I have always been involved in risk management, whether it was planning for family trips, collecting the bills and calculating the budget of the house, or assisting my father in the investment decisions. Being a woman from a developing country, I was raised in a joint family wherein each, and every penny was critical. Even though it was difficult to make ends meet, investment has always been a critical part of the family. I was interested in all the financial activities and used to gain knowledge from my father about the different aspects of finance and accounting. Since he worked as an auditor, he used to pass on his knowledge and experiences at work. Being so closed to him, he used to share a lot on capital markets and risk management. He used to talk about investment in risky assets and how one could make a lot of money trading on the capital market. From such discussions, I became interested in the capital.
In high school, I bought my first shares, but they were not successful. I never gave up but took it as a challenge. I set a goal to accomplish once I am through with my college education. I set both short and long-term goals. My short-term goal is to help the first company that I would be employed to manage its financial risks by developing and applying effective risk management strategies.
I started investing in bonds and shares for long term investments once I started working as a marketing associate. Since my first job as a marketing associate was in a startup called ASA diagnostics, I was responsible for both the financial and marketing activities of the company. Then I worked at Indegene private limited where my experience as Accounting Auditing and Structured Finance Advisory and then at ASA diagnostics as Business development manager – for all the marketing and financial activities. The experiences of the business made me understand how risks affect firms and the vulnerability of firms to risk exposures.
From 2018 December till now, I have been involved in my family business called Five Star Trading Corporation, which is a share trading company (which my father and I started in 2016). I am responsible for risk management, and I am enthused by tremendous opportunities that the market provides on investment in capital markets. As a precautionary measure against the risk associated with a large investment in securities, I have gone through various large companies that have crumbled in the past and learned some of the poor-risk controls that these firms put in place and resulted in their collapse.
I have now finished the FMVA certification and also got admit for MBA in a top business school in Europe. I hope to continue with my career advancement in finance and marketing because I want to start and run a successful business as some of the leading investors on our time, such as Warren Buffer. I am a big fan of Warren Buffet and keenly follow his footsteps because I want to leave a mark in the world of investment. I am a risk-taker and wish to get more exposure in the field.
