How Pinterest Enables Marketers to Target Specific Microcultures
A microculture is a group of people who share similar values and tastes represented within a broader culture. Social media platforms enable these microcultures to share ideas they have, communicate, and learn new things in their area of interest. Pinterest is a social media platform where a person can open a page on Pinterest and give it a name according to its purpose and then share photos and infographics related to the purpose. Other Pinterest users interested in the page can follow it and see the material posted, and they can comment on them; thus, forming a microculture. We will examine two such microcultures on Pinterest and their uses.
The first page is called Engineering Is Awesome, managed by Mandy Sterlings (“41 Best Engineering Is Awesome Images: Engineering, Engineering Humor, Engineering Quotes.”). The page shares images of beautiful and complete engineering structures, which show the excellent value that engineering has had in society. The user also shares infographics on topics including significant moments for women in engineering and ranking of top civil engineering projects, among others. This page helps in sharing information that is not shared mostly in engineering classrooms and therefore develops a more profound passion for engineering.
Another page is called DIY (Do It Yourself) Home décor, and deals with home improvement projects that you can do yourself. The owner of this page shares home improvement ideas and instructions, which a person can do on their own with readily available materials. People can learn to build their homes to be comfortable and beautiful, thus improving their quality of life.
Social media sites provide a platform for microcultures to share ideas. This sharing of ideas leads to more deep-seated passion in the specific topics and also shares instructions on doable activities to improve on the quality of life. People may also contact the owner of the particular page if they want to purchase an item, thus enhancing business.
