 Special Supervisory Concerns Ethic

Ethics – E

Part One

What are the common workplace ethics for leaders and employees in any organization? What are values, and what role do values play in ethics?

Workplace place ethics are the specific behaviors of employees that are mostly invincible; however, they are noticeable when they are absent. Some of the fundamental ethics for the administration and workforce are punctuality, responsibility, loyalty, teamwork, professionalism, positive attitude at all times, and professionalism. Values are organizational factors and guidelines that help in determining acceptable standards of behavior for all the staff members when they are inside or outside the organization. Mostly values are shared within organizations, and they help to unite and foster sustainable relationships. Values play a vital role in various ethical decision-making processes. To be more precise, they help in determining the most appropriate behavior standards. Secondly, they provide the best frameworks and strategies for conflict resolution initiatives. Also, values such as freedom, hard work, tolerance, and responsibility serve the purpose of motivating the employees to be more productive.

According to the video, what are the ways that an organization can establish and maintain an ethical work environment?  Which of the ways do you feel is the most important?  Why?

To ensure an appropriate work environment, organizations can implement and sustain an ethical work environment in various ways. First of all, through a documented code of conduct (CommlabIndia, 2010). As a result, all employees in an organization should have written a set of laws that guide them, including the newly recruited staff members. Written codes of conduct are vital because they define organizational ethics and provide a framework in which they can work and be maintained. Another strategy to foster ethics is through the acknowledgment and rewards of good behavior. The last strategy and perhaps the most crucial strategy of maintaining ethics is through the implementation of training programs. Training is essential because it reminds the workers of what is acceptable concerning the goals and objectives of the organization. Therefore, guidance and instructions should be provided by the administrative personnel.

Why are ethics so important to the individual and an organization?

According to organizational scholars, establishing and maintaining an ethical work environment is vital in an individual and collective environment. In that, it reminds the workers of what is acceptable concerning the goals and objectives of the organization. To be more specific, ethical factors like punctuality and responsibility save on time and resources, thereby maximizing the output. Secondly, loyalty and teamwork foster unity and trustworthiness, thus making the work environment supportive and sustainable. Lastly, professionalism ensures the most useful skills and abilities apply to an organization. In other words, an ethical work environment improves productivity since it has a positive and motivational impact on the employees (Ninemeier, 2011). Also, since it provides the right framework for work, it improves the organizational reputation, which in turn fosters organizational performance.

Part Two

You are in charge of receiving products for a hotel.  Through a delivery error, a large quantity of products is received, and the invoice reflects a smaller number.  If you say nothing, your cost of sales will be much lower, and you would make your monthly bonus.

I work in a hotel, and I am in charge of delivery, and there was an error, and the invoice indicates a lower number than what we received. On the one hand, if I report the problem, I will not make a bonus. On the other hand, if I say nothing, the price of sales will be minimal, and I would earn a monthly bonus. In most cases, our organization maximizes on establishing and maintaining an ethical work environment. Therefore a solution to this situation I will implement various sections of the six-step ethical decision-making process. That is, is it the truth? Can I live with the decision? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned participants? (Ninemeier, 2011).  Concerning the ethical requirements of our organization, I will have to report the delivery error to my superiors because our business partnerships are usually fostered on honesty, openness, and truthfulness. Another consideration that I will use to make my decision is whether or not the outcome will lead to goodwill and better business relationships. As a result, I will ignore the bonus because it is only short term. On the other hand, if we let the supplier know the delivery error, I will enable goodwill for the long-term part of the business, thereby leading to high production.

You supervise a good friend who is not performing to the required standards.  According to company policy, you should meet with the employee/friend to discuss the performance issues and write a report for their personnel file.

In my area of work, I supervise an employee who is a good friend. However, the person does not perform competitively. As a result, I will follow the organizational rule by meeting my counterpart to discuss what is required and later personal reports. Usually, hard work and competency are a priority for our organization, and my friend poses a considerable challenge to the overall productivity and performance of our company. Therefore a solution to this situation I will implement some sections of the six-step ethical decision-making process. That is, will my initiative build goodwill and better relationships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Is it the truth? Is it legal, and can I live with my decision? (Ninemeier, 2011). First of all, talking to my friend might make him change and adopt competency. As a result, it will build a better work relationship between the supervisor, other workers, and the administration, thereby leading to success. Another important consideration that I will use to make my decision is implementing a documented code of conduct (CommlabIndia, 2010). And this will provide a set of written laws that will guide my friend and other workers, including the newly recruited staff, to maintain an ethical work environment.

Identify the ethical dilemmas in this workplace scene between co-workers?

Ethical or moral dilemmas are situations where there are two conflicting decisions to be made and, in these situations, require ethical guidelines that ensure the most appropriate outcomes. In this workplace scene, Mike wants to take a wireless card home. And he justifies his actions by claiming that it is necessary to test the equipment first before recommending it to the customers (Mediapartners, 2015). On the other hand, Danny, who is on his third day as an employee of the firm, does not feel right about it. What is more, Tom’s counterpart, who has in the firm for a while, supports Mike and acknowledges that getting free stuff is the main reason he works in that company. Another dilemma is that Mike feels they are stealing while the other employees say that if the invoice is changed, then the store gets a free replacement. Danny does not feel right about it and realizes that it is not ethical.

What are a few things the new employee should do after being put in this ethical situation?

First of all, Danny must be self-confidence to seek out different opinions about the issue and decide what is right in that particular ethical situation (Ninemeier, 2011). Secondly, he has to be tough-minded to resist the temptations from his counterparts and foster ethical requirements. That aside, Danny could implement various sections of the six-step ethical decision-making process. That is, is it the truth? Can he live with the decision? Will it be beneficial to all concerned participants? Will it build goodwill and better relationships? Is it the truth? And is it legal? (Ninemeier, 2011). Business partnerships are usually fostered on honesty, openness, and truthfulness. Therefore, Danny should decide while relating to whether or not the outcome will lead to goodwill and better organizational performance.

Is free stuff stealing?  Should the new employee change the invoice?

Well, getting free products for personal use is not stealing; however, the rightful owner should be aware of the free stuff that the employees are taking home. And the fact that the other workers are motivating Danny to change the invoice means that they are guilty, and that is why they are hiding their deeds by changing the numbers in the invoice. All in, the new employee should not change the invoice. And this is because it is not acceptable concerning the goals and objectives of the organization. Besides, changing the invoice only means that the organization will have losses in the long run.
