Impact of technology on society
Technology has revolutionized the corporate and social sector a great deal. For over the last 20 years, there are technology changes in workplaces, pieces of machinery, and homes. For instance, there is the introduction of new electronic cars like Tesla, which are run by technology. Though technology is a sign that the world is growing and changing for the better, there are negative aspects that technology has brought. The revolution did not come without a price. The fact is that it has changed some sectors for the worse, and hence people have begun to question the significance of technology in society (Bronzan, 2019). It has affected both teenagers, adults and children, especially at home, and there are needs to look upon it for the better of our social future. This paper discusses the negative impact of technology on our society.
It affects our sleeping habits.
Technology has affected our sleeping habits. Teenagers or adults are fond of spending most of their time chatting or texting through Smartphones. Recent studies have shown that most teenagers sleep late hours while watching contents on their mobile phones. It has affected the regular sleeping routines in homes. Some of the family members do not give each other time and sleep late. The devices are addictive, and it is hard to keep the devices away when tired. Both children and adults spend countless hours watching funny videos or other mindless amusements. It is challenging to keep away from the apps such as Facebook, Tik Tok, we chat, Instagram, telegrams since they contain entertaining contents that make us glued to our smartphones and tend to sleep late.
Another negative impact of technology is that it leaves us feeling isolated. Most people are glued to their electronic devices and do not socialize with each other. It has been noted that the majority of the students in institutions tend to spend most of their time on technological devices such as laptops and mobile phones. They do research using the machines and do not value discussion groups’ importance (Bronzan, 2019). Besides, it makes them not read much since all contents are found on various websites using the devices. It makes them isolate themselves from other people and tend to befriend their gadgets more than people. Since most of our interaction is on social media, we disconnect ourselves from humanity and do not bother and what is around us. It has been discovered that the majority of the people do not know their neighbors like in ancient times. It is because technology has caused the disconnection of people and hence reduced the social cohesions among neighbours.
Technology has caused
loss of empathy as people in society become more accustomed to online violence. Since people are addicted to online contents, we do not think about the effects in the future. People tend to ignore the results of the rays from smartphones. Research has deduced that the more a phone vibrates in a users pocket, the individual might develop cancer, but people tend to ignore and hence loss of empathy (Legg, 2020). There is a loss of privacy online, and the risk of hacking creates more deceit. People tend to use false profiles on social media platforms and baits new users hence causing fraud. There are several online fraud cases where victims have lost valuable items such as money to online scams.
Impact on families
Technology has affected families in a significant way. Most parents and children are glued to technology and find it difficult to bond as a family. For instance, children are addicted to playing video games and do not want to do house chore or help their parents. They spend most of their times playing video games, and some do not have time to read or study at home. The parents, on the other side, are glued to Smartphone’sSmartphone’s and do not interact with their children. It has made it difficult to shape their children behaviour; hence majority have become deviant. According to Bronzan (2019), technology does not build the best social skills. We miss the face to face communication, and hence some people lack etiquette while talking to others. Our abilities to pick up on social body language are not developed in technology, therefore causing miscommunication in society.
Some technological sites have contributed to moral decay. There are over 60 000 pornographic sites that are viewed by billions of people in the world. Most of the viewers are teenagers and hence has contributed to moral decay in society. Some of the sites have lead teenagers to indulge in drug and substance use. They imitate what they are viewing on the websites and thus change their behaviours for the worse. There are explicit contents and violent videos online that have contributed to the emergence of teenage gangs and criminal groups. Another issue is that technology has affected the imagination of children. Most of the children are not creative in making items to play with. They tend not to use much more energy in a dream and putting their visions into reality. The children tend to use technological devices such as computers and pads to find answers. Brown and Choong (2005) found that technology has lead to an increase in cheating in exams. Students tend to use dishonesty in their works and have been found to plagiarize the contents. It means technology has made them dishonest.
Impact on health
On health issues, technology has cause problems in the eyes and ears. It is vivid that too much light affects the eyes. Those individuals who aware constantly of their computers tend to develop eyes problems. Besides, some individuals tend to listen to loud music with earphones. They tend to develop hearing problems.
Similarly, technology has affected individuals while driving since some drive while calling or texting, they lose control, causing accidents, and some lose their lives. Besides ”phone thumbs” is another severe health issues that affect people in society (Legg, 2020). Phone thumb is the development of tendonitis within the thumb. It is usually caused by the continuous and frequent use of the thumb when texting or pushing buttons. The regular use of thumbs causes pain, and when it persists, it develops tendons, which are health issues in society.
Technology causes more energy consumption and pollution. Technology requires more energy to run, and hence people have to use more resources such as cost in making sure that technology satisfies them (Greenwood,2019). it also requires a lot of energy to produce or manufacture electronic devices that are in high demand. The devices have a lifespan where the devices are thrown away after they die, causing pollution in society. The electronic gadgets are non-biodegradable and do not decompose, affecting soil fertility, water, and land pollution.
Conclusion
Society has been greatly affected by technology and caused more damage as it advances. For instance, it has broken the socialization process in families, caused pollutions since the devices are biodegradable and have contributed to moral decay in society. Some of the contents that technology offers have made children not become imaginative or creative since they seek answers on technological websites. Besides, in education, technology has increased dishonesty among students and contributed to the rise of plagiarism. Lastly, it has affected people sleeping habits since they spend more hours on technological devices at night, causing back and neck pains. Also, it has affected peoples health, such as painful eyes and ears.
