THEORY
The implementation of this inquiry will be based on the Social Support Theory. The theory will determine whether the application of the inquiry at Dominican University will improve the academic performance of English as a Second Language (ESL) nursing students and their retention rates (Salamonson et al., 2019). Social Support Theory emphasizes the significance of developing a supportive environment that provides sound and effective support systems (Fleury et al., 2009). The theory offers measurements that assist in the determination of a person’s perception of being supported and cared for.
Social Support theory framework is centered on the proposition that instrumental, informational, emotional, and appraisal support are essential to enhance improvement (Paterson et al., 2016). Guidance and counseling mentorship program is instrumental in developing a positive attitude among ESL nursing students towards their academic tasks (Akbulut-Bailey, 2012). Guidance and counseling mentorship program will provide ample environment for ESL students, and help them with different challenges they experience
Social support has proved to be effective in managing the effects of stress and promoting individual well-being on nursing students (Reeve et al., 2013). Guidance and counseling mentorship programs using a social support framework will enable faculty to understand students’ perceptions of the educational environment (Henderson et al., 2016). Studies conducted by Choi, 2016) confirms that support aimed at improving ESL students’ understanding and use of English in their academic environment, plays a significant role in assisting the students to overcome academic challenges (Choi, 2016)
