Developmental Markers
A nurse is required to assess whether her emotional and social development is on the right track. Milestones include whether she is afraid of strangers and clinging to familiar adults and having favorite toys. The communication/language assessment includes whether she can make familiar sounds such as ‘baba’ ‘mama,’ copying sounds, and making gestures and can point at things using her fingers. For cognitive development the nurse assesses whether she can pick stuff between index and thumb finger, moves things between her two hands, she can put things in mouth, can watch the path of falling things, looks for things she sees you hiding, and plays a peek-a-boo (CDC, 2018). Physical and movement milestones include standing and holding on, sits well without support, crawling, and pulls to stand.
Recommendations
As per the information, a 25th percentile weight and height is on a lower end of the spectrum but still within an appropriate range for a nine-month female infant. However, the 5th percentile head circumference is a concern (Silva et al., 2018). Therefore, interview questions will cover the following: Did the mother introduce pureed foods such as fruits and vegetables to the infant one at a time? Whether the mother has adequate milk to breastfeed? Is the baby latching and have finger foods introduced? Besides, the interview can also cover any family stressors to the mother to inform adaptions strategy to the problem.
According to evidence-based practice on infant nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for up to six months before introducing any form of months foods like fruits, cereals, and vegetables (CDC, 2018). Therefore, the mother should be taught about proper feeding techniques. The mother should introduce finger foods and must include breast bottles and pumps a well as iron and vitamin D supplements.
