Influence of IOM Report on Nursing Education

Summary of the report

The 2010 IOM report contained four main messages. The first message recommended that nurses ought to utilize to the maximum the skills, training, and education they have attained (Arzouman, 2016). This was meant to improve public health by ensuring the unique contributions of nurses are exploited. The second recommendation involved nursing education. It stated that all nurses are supposed to achieve updates and a high level of academic progression through the enhanced education system (Arzouman, 2016). Another message emphasized the need for partnership between nurses (Arzouman, 2016). Physicians and other medical professionals in improving health care in the United States. The partnership was meant to occur not only in providing care but also in administrative policies, education, and designing health policies. The last message of the report referred to the foundation requirements for the other three messages. The recommendation was that for there to be effectiveness and efficiency in policymaking and planning care, there is a need for improvement in data collection and information infrastructure (Arzouman, 2016).

Impact of the IOM report on nursing education and leadership

The report pointed out the need for nursing to attain a high level of education and the improvement of the education system. The report has influenced the establishment of education programs for nurses that harness their capacity to foster change (Arzouman, 2016). Furthermore, innovative opportunities in nursing professional growth and education have improved since the IOM report. Currently, nurses are recognized as a leading key in the development of sustainable and successful health care in the country due to the development of leadership skills influenced by the report. More nurses are attaining advanced degrees and can fully utilize the training and skills in practice. According to Salmond & Echevarria (2017), it is expected that 80% of the nurses will be BSNs by the end of 2020 and all because of the influence of the report. According to King Jr. (2019), the report and the improvement of the education system have influenced BSN-trained nurses to attain skills as industry leaders and policymakers.

The necessity of developing the role of nurses to fit the needs of adverse patients and elderly

The IOM report called upon all nurses to achieve skills and necessary education levels to qualify to contribute to designing the healthcare industry. Among the reforms requires involved caring for diverse and elderly patients. Providing care for this population of patients is hindered by many factors like communication and poor interaction, culture, beliefs, and other underlying medical conditions (Arzouman, 2016). It is estimated that the number of older adults is going to double by 2025 which will create many problems in the health care system (King Jr, 2019). Nurses’ roles and trained should be such that the professional will be able to understand the needs of the patients and meet them. Nurses should be trained properly on interaction with diverse and elderly patients especially in this era of promotion of patient autonomy (Biernacki et al., 2015). It is estimated that this older generation will be the most diverse in the country so far which will make providing care more complicated hence the need for increasing the workforce to ensure quality provision of care.

Importance of lifelong learning and professional development in the provision of care to a diverse population

Ongoing education and professional development foster the better transition of nursing students to practice and enhance quality and competence through the career span. Lifelong learning provides nurses with opportunities to improve their knowledge required to solve problems and think critically in providing care to diverse patients. professional development opportunities sharpen nurses’ knowledge and understanding required in decision making and problem-solving in caring for the diverse and elderly population (King Jr, 2019). Furthermore, lifelong learning helps nurses develop a better connection with a broad range of people and maintain an open mind.

Role of nurses in the promotion of effective patient care

Nurses play a critical role in the provision of patient care. They can hence use their position to promote effective patient care. Nurses can use the knowledge they have acquired in training and professional development opportunities to promote patient autonomy by applying better communication and interaction strategies (Biernacki et al., 2015). Understanding the needs of the patient is the key to the provision of effective care and promotion of patient satisfaction. Due to the enhancement of the education system, nurses now understand that they have the power to influence policymaking and healthcare promotion (Salmond, and Echevarria, 2017). They can use their position to foster better innovations and policies that will promote patient care. Continuing education help nurses stay up to date with changes that are affecting the healthcare industry.
