Iran and Mexico

Both Iran and Mexico experienced revolutions that shaped their destinies; yet, the actual objectives of these revolutions have been contested since their inceptions. Discuss how debate over the aspirations and goals of each revolution led to social and political rifts in each country that continues to the present. In the case of Iran, be sure to consider the tension between theocracy and secularism/republicanism that has long been a theme in Iranian history and politics. 2. What have been the short and long-term effects of imperialism on Mexico and Iran? In what ways and to what extent are these countries’ current economic and political problems the product of imperialism and to what extent are their roots domestic? (Note – while Iran was never formally colonized, imperialism has certainly played a large role in Iran’s history and perception of itself.) 3. Explain how the regimes that have ruled Mexico and Iran have maintained legitimacy and power, as well as to what extent reformers have either failed or succeeded in democratizing their countries. In the case of Mexico, describe how the one-party regime held onto power as well as how and why the PRI eventually ceded this monopoly of power. In the case of Iran explain how the regime has maintained legitimacy and why movements to open up the regime in the early 1990’s, 2009 and present have failed or stalled. 4. What strategies have Mexico and Iran employed to promote economic development? What ideological, religious, economic, and political factors have guided their economic development what have been the effects of oil on their political and economic systems?
