Kenya is a country located in Eastern Africa
Kenya is a country located in Eastern Africa which stands out due to its richness in culture and origin of some familiar names like former US Barrack Obama. The country’s capital city is Nairobi which holds the record as the only capital city in the world that has a national park. The great history of the country pushes me to make a new friend from the country to ensure that I get more knowledge about it. The country strides towards economic development are making one the best country to invest in the future in Africa ranking position 5.
For the requirements and personal satisfaction and quest for knowledge, I interviewed a friend from Kenya by name Antonio. We talked in length as I wanted to understand why the country stands outs in many aspects. We discussed and finally settled for National prayers day and Huduma day.
Huduma day
Huduma means service in Swahili which national language in the country. The holiday is celebrated in the whole nation on October 10 every year. The holiday was formerly known as Moi day, which was named after the second president of Kenya the late Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi who passed died this year to honour his service as the president for 24 years. The current president renamed the holiday in 2019. Kenyans celebrate the day to recognize the services that the government is performing and has performed to the public.
The Huduma is commemorated as a day of service and volunteerism. The day is celebrated to encourage the people to volunteer and give service to each other to ensure the country grows in all aspects. Kenya is divided into 47 counties, and each county holds the celebration’s events led by the governor of every county. The presidents also hold the ceremony where the governments inform the citizens all plans and services it plans in the future. A person can judge that the celebrations are individualistic oriented. Still, they commemorate the struggles that the founders went through to take away independence and transformed the independence to serve the people.
National prayers day
Over the past few decades, tribalism is a significant contribution of non-peaceful coexistence in Kenya, especially during and after national elections. Kenya was hit most in the 2002 election, post-election violence erupted, and many people were displaced and lost lives. It took the effort of Kofi Annan to mediate a peace deal. The elections that followed resulted in protests and divisions. To ensure there was no protests and violence, the president and opposition leaders negotiated and prayers day developed. Prayers day aims at national forgiveness and encouraging everyone to live peacefully. The prayers are held annually, and all religions are included in the day’s events. The day teaches Kenyans to live beyond tribal and religious divisions.
At the end of the conversation, I established that Kenya needs peaceful coexistence for the economy to grow in greater heights. The two celebrations and holidays focus on national reconciliation and fostering peace.
