Leading an analytics team

Leading an analytics team can have many challenges. It forces a person to show their best leadership qualities for the project to be a success. When the project is in its infancy, there is always a sense of confidence and optimism among the group. The members are excited to get started, and the possibilities are endless. However, as the project drags on, the doubts start to creep in. People start to get conflicting ideas on how the project should get run. The risks that were sugar-coated at first are now laid bare for all to see. Strong leadership is needed to make this project a success. Some of the qualities required are shown below.

Showing professionalism and being a role model. A good leader should always maintain professionalism in his work. Make sure that the work environment maintains the seriousness that it needs to have. You should not be afraid to disagree with friends and close colleagues because that is part of the job. You should also act as a role model by doing your work diligently. Your group is more likely to stick to their tasks if they see you doing the same.

A leader should be assertive in his decisions. This means making a good decision and sticking to it. This is not to say that a leader should not listen to the opinions of others, but they should sample all the information at hand, and once they make a decision, it is final.

A leader should have a clear sense of direction in the project. The members should know from the start what you expect of them. Their roles should be clearly defined, and a reward mechanism, if they exceed the expectations, as well as a punishment mechanism if they fail in their duties.
