In this article, Herbein et al. 2018 highlight that learning public speaking is a skill that is already needed in elementary schools. However, the authors acknowledge that there exists a significant gap in the systematic studies that intend to promote public speaking among elementary schools. As a result, this study develops and evaluates a public speaking training program for elementary children to understand the existing gap. The training comprised an extracurricular training program consisting of twelve units covering nonverbal communication, comprehensibility, and anxiety. A total number of sixty-five elementary school children were used in the study to identify the effects of training on speech anxiety and public speaking skills. Findings from this study showed that training results in positive impacts on overall public speaking skills. In this case, the authors showed that participation in training activities or programs before giving a public speech enables individuals to be more organized and equipped with both verbal and non-verbal skills during their speech.

This article is reliable because it is a scholarly study conducted by renowned scholars in the public speaking field. Besides, the study is recent enough implying that it presents insights to public speaking skills that are still applicable in the present times. I can use this article to learn more about early training and how that would improve my public speaking skills. Since this study highlights that training on public speaking skills starts as early as in elementary schools, I will ensure that I grasp each of the mentioned training skills to ensure that I become more organized and perform my verbal and non-verbal skills during the speech. This will enable me to present a perfect speech and be more composed while delivering the speech.

Mbato, in this study highlights that anxiety, cultural barriers, and lack of English competence may result in the failure of EFL students in public speaking. Based on this study, right learning and coaching strategies and conducive learning environments are likely to enhance student’s capability while delivering speeches. Mbato’s study intends to identify whether the implementation of various learning techniques would enhance the public speaking skills among Indonesian EFL students.  The study used fifty-six students who enrolled in three public speaking classes in Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta in the 2017-2018 academic year. The research question in this study included, to what degree does the application of multiple learning processes enhance learners’ public speaking skills. Results from this study revealed that multiple earning strategies such as self-assessments, reflections, teacher, independent, and peer learning plans help individuals to develop better public speaking skills.

Mbato’s article is reliable since it is scholarly and was published recently. In this case, the article highlights the necessary strategies that would be vital in enhancing my public speaking skills. I would use this article to learn about the multiple learning strategies, including self-assessments, reflections, teacher, independent, and peer strategies to ensure that I have perfected my public speaking skills in preparation for the speech. Practices such as self-assessments and reflections would enable me to understand my strengths so that I could foster those attributes. Besides, through self-reflection and self-assessment, I could understand my weaknesses in public speaking which I can then work on improving in these areas to ensure that I improve my overall public speaking skills. In this article, McNatt highlights that most of the service-learning studies have been labeled as testimonial and anecdotal with increased calls for more empirical information to back up the alleged benefits of the service-learning tool in enhancing public speaking skills. This study conducts a longitudinal review which intends to examine the impact of service-learning projects on various oral communication skills. The study comprised the involvement of one of the twenty different team-created service-learning projects equated to traditional research projects. The study’s hypothesis stated that service-learning strategies are vital in enhancing students’ public speaking skills, lowering their anxiety, and public speaking self-efficacy. Results from the study revealed that various service-learning activities can positively impact learners in each of the significant public speaking areas. Besides, it was found that service-learning can significantly enable those students with low self-efficacy in public speaking to gain more confidence and improve on their overall public speaking techniques.

This article is reliable since it is peer reviewed implying that it contains vital information that has been well researched and proven by past and present scholars. Besides, this article is recent which means that its information and results are applicable in the present times. I will use this study to learn more about service-learning programs and how they could enhance my overall public speaking skills. For instance, this study can aid me to raise my public speaking efficacy levels from low to high thus aiding me to embrace the best public speaking techniques during the delivery of speech. As a result, I would have enhanced skills in public speaking which means that I will no longer be affected by other setbacks such as anxiety during public speaking.

This study by Spieler and Miltenberger evaluates the effectiveness of awareness training in reducing three nervous behaviors that are experienced during public speaking. These behaviors, as highlighted in the article include tongue clicks, inappropriate use of the term like, and filled pauses. The study employed four university learners who delivered speeches during assessment and basement sessions. Results from the study indicated that awareness training led to significant reductions in target behaviors across all the participants. Besides, the study demonstrated that booster awareness training sessions are vital for all individuals to attain further decreases in target behaviors. Generality probes performed before small audience showed that the treatment effects remained the same. Results on social validity scores showed that the treatment was acceptable, and participants portrayed not just reduced use of verbal filters, but enhanced overall public speaking capability post treatment.

This study is reliable since it is a peer reviewed article. The article was also published recently implying that most of the information that it presents is applicable in the present time. I would use this study for various reasons. For instance, I can embrace the awareness program presented in this study to ensure that I minimize the three nervous behaviors that are usually experienced during public speaking, including tongue clicks, inappropriate use of the term like, and filled pauses. In this case, the study would help me to be more prepared before giving my public speech. Besides, I would also use the study to not only reduce my verbal filters but also enhance my overall public speaking capacity so that I can have what it takes to stand before people and give them my speech as required.
