Literary Interpretation Analysis Essay

Lisa Congdon showed interest in swimming even at an early age; she was a swimmer ever since she was eight years old. She was nine years old when her swim team won a competition. She describes how the swimming pool is where she always wanted to be. Her parents were very supportive that they registered her in official team support. She at first never expressed a passion for competitive swimming; she only joined a team to be in the pool. However, he grew an interest in swimming competitively but quit after some time due to exhaustion that came after training. She, however, learned to do hard training with high endurance when she was seventeen years old. She was, however, involved in an accident that needed surgery to repair. Her physiotherapist and orthopedic surgeon advised her to swim and lift weight to help her get better. After her recovery, she joined the swim team in high school. It is here that she worked hard and competed well enough to become one of the top swimmers. When she graduated from college, she went to San Fransisco, where she became a swimmer once more. She met friends who would later become like family. She persisted in training and won many medals. She managed to become the first female coach in the masters’ team. Even as she grew older, she always kept going back to the water.

Lisa uses vivid descriptions in her writing. At the beginning of the story, she describes how they were all barefoot. She says that their bodies were tan and dressed in faded team suits (Congdon). Their mouths were red because of eating cherry-flavored Jell-O blocks. This vivid description helps the readers to picture their appearance; it is a helpful tool o making the story more exciting and lively. It enables the readers to imagine the situation and, therefore, enjoy the story better.

Lisa Congdon uses smiley in her work. She says ‘that she took to swimming as she took to eating. Eating is an activity that people need to survive. Eating is not a bother to people since people do not find it difficult. When Lisa says that she too to swimming as she did to eating, it means that to her, it was something that she could not do without swimming. She moreover put no effort into loving swimming. It signifies that Lisa would go swimming as many times as she could. To her, swimming became a necessity which she could not live without it.

She uses rhetorical questions in her writing. Could I keep up? Would I still be able to race? Was I going to fit in? Would people be welcoming? She uses these rhetorical questions to express her doubt about whether she would cope with joining the team. The use of rhetorical questions makes the reader think critically of what is going on in the passage. When the audience reads through, they understand what the writer is saying since they share their feelings. When a reader reads through these rhetorical questions, they share in the doubt that Lisa has concerning getting acceptance to the team and whether he would manage to cope.

Lisa uses personification in her texts. She says that the cold water always calls her back, giving water the attribute of a human being. She writes that water wakes us up and holds us in times of difficulties. She gives water the attribute of waking someone up; human beings normally do this to comfort those who are low. She says that water holds someone up in times of difficulties; this means she gives water the attribute of comforting someone and being there for them; this is also a human characteristic.

She uses symbolism in the story. She uses water to symbolize a comforter. She says that water helps even awkward people to move with grace; this symbolizes that water accepts all kinds of people and hel[s them back to their feet. She says that it helps those who are heavy to feel light; this means that it takes away their burdens and sufferings. Water helps the disabled feel accomplished; this means that water makes a broken person whole again because of its comfort. She says that it is an emotional blanket when we are most vulnerable. Water is a good distraction to make one heal all the brokenness inside. She writes that water is a type of movement that supports everyone without discriminating them from the condition they are in. this symbolizes that water accepts people the way they are and becomes a force that drives them to move forward even in times of distress.

In conclusion, the writer has a passion and love for swimming. The writer uses different literature styles to convey her message. She uses vivid description in her writing to help create a mental picture in the reader, creating a better understanding of the topic. She uses smiley in her writing; the comparison gives us a picture of how much she loved swimming. Lisa uses rhetorical questions in her writing.
