Caregiver Influence
The way the mother gave the nonverbal responses showed that she was trying to understand what the child needed from the top shelf. The child looked at her mother, who tried reaching the item from the top, but luckily, the attendant came and handed the child the item. But the child pointed clearly to the item she wanted by saying, “this.” And the mother explained to the child why she should say thank you, and the little girl responded by saying, “thank you.”
Language milestone
The language milestones of a child of 3 years are following instructions with 2 or 3 steps. I observed this from the child when she followed what her mother said, and it is precisely what children of her age would do. There is talking well that strangers can understand, and this was observed from the kid when the attendant understood her well when she said thank you. The item the child picked was a doll, and the way she expressed her need for the toy is that “I want this,” and despite not knowing the exact name, she used words such as “I,” which is typical for children of her age.
Supportive strategy
I felt that the mother was supporting child language development because the child learned something new, which is thank you once someone does an act of kindness to you. Though the thank you is not very clear, she is aware of why that word has to be said. The strategy used is literal meanings where the child repeats the words that they have heard though they really can’t understand what the words do mean (Millovich, June 200).
