MANAGEMENT

According to Dyess et al., 2016, nurse leaders are responsible for coming up with a healthy and safe environment that contributes to patients’ engagement and adds to healthcare professionals’ work. This advocacy by the world leaders leads to optimism and enhanced professional standards at the workplace. Further on, there exists an optimization of patient care and a team culture among the employees.

Nurse leaders advocate for their employees’ wellbeing as it determines the work that they put out. The following are the areas where nurse leaders may advocate for their employees; proper working conditions such as adequate staff with appropriate training, availability of time for leave and breaks, reasonable compensation not leaving out vacation and sick days, protection from violence from colleagues and patients or their families as well as rallying behind the responsible and humane portrayal of nurses in the media. This can also help challenge existing stereotypes about nurses and their roles in patient care. Nursing leaders also inform their employees regarding healthcare policies to enable them to make decisions regarding their work. (Papa &Venella, 2013)

Advocacy for employees improves the level of patient care and outcomes. This is because the nursing staff will be better motivated to work for the good of patients. Furthermore, knowledge of healthcare policies and guidelines enables the nurses to act as advocates of the patients themselves to preserve human life and dignity. (Fischer, 2017)  Advocacy also improves patients’ level of engagement by the nurses since they do not have to deal with stereotypes regarding patient care.
