Management skills today
Introduction
As a contemporary manager, I understand that the decision making process on time is paramount. Therefore, my top 5 skills that form my road map as a manager in the modern world include negotiation, Emotional Intelligence, Critical thinking, people management, and creativity (Gray, 2016, para. 6).
Top five most important skills for today’s manager
The wheelchair industry today requires a manager who can intertwine Critical thinking, people management, and creativity. The needs are different from one user to another. Therefore, the design should fit each need and ensure comfort when using wheelchairs. Thus, the available human resource should be engaged to give their views and suggestions on what should be included or excluded. More so, EW has had the culture of engaging their customers, which should include the workers to get their feedback on various actions carried by the company (Gray, 2016, para. 7). As a result, Critical thinking and creativity will play a critical role in designing the demanded wheelchair models to compete better in the market.
Negotiation and Emotional Intelligence are vital in business today. This is key when dealing with customers from different backgrounds and schools of thought. The cultural differences is a crucial factor to consider if a company want to do business globally (Reddy, 2016, para. 39). Negotiation for working space and other deals play an imperative role in ensuring profitable deals are struck. Therefore, as a manager have to understand the customs and behaviors of the targeted customers and stakeholders.
Three skills that Dwight and Ike left off the list
However, Dwight and Ike might have left Business Strategy and Planning, Communication Skills, and Influencing Skills. The strategy and planning aspect includes including the team to brainstorm, develop, and then execute your strategy for the best results. Communication is equally a critical skill that Dwight and Ike cannot ignore in their quest to go global. It should be clear on the challenges they will face on the language barrier and having effective communication in all regions. Lastly, being influential is crucial in ensuring the employee and stakeholders buy into your goals and implement your strategy (Management Centre Europe, 2018, para. 9).
Skills that need more development and my strengths
The skills that I believe require more development from my discussion are emotional intelligence and negotiation. These two are required daily as each customer requires an approach that will lead to a business deal. Failure to understand the customer can lead to anger, tonal variation, and misconduct when discussing a deal. On the other hand, creativity and critical thinking skills are my strengths. I am good at innovation and quick to find solutions to daily problems (Reddy, 2016, para. 42). As a result, I have been helping my team to get answers to issues facing the industry.
