Micro theme- Module 8
According to Durkheim, people obey because they want to survive in a given society. People understand that obedience brings harmony, and that is the reason they will always obey. Hobbes portrays that people are obedient because of the social contract. People will still disobey even when there is a social contract.
According to Foucault, people will always obey the authority because of the power that comes with it. In the fall of the Berlin Wall, civil disobedience was because they were avoiding division of the people, unlike in the four philosophers’ perspective. They disobeyed because they seek for fairness and peace. In the Tiananmen Square protest, people disobeyed not they did not fear the consequences, but because they wanted to protect their rights.
Disobedience, unlike the view of the four philosophers, is not because people do not respect the authority. Sometimes disobedience is because people want their rights protected, and it is the right thing to do. People will always obey daily, but they have a limit, primarily when the state does not protect their rights.
I grade my work as 4 out of 5 because I gave different perspectives of philosophers’ views on obeying, which helps in comparing various aspects of obedience and disobedience.
