Most societies are made up of majority and minority groups
Most societies are made up of majority and minority groups. The minority is a group of people who are singled out from the rest of the people because of having certain characteristics, such as a different race from the majority. In a democratic society, the majority have a role to protect and the minority.
Minority groups ought to be protected against discrimination by majority groups. Racial discrimination is one of the major problems that minority groups encounter from majority groups. As a member of the majority group, one should start with themselves in avoiding behaving in a manner likely to create racial discrimination. They should also call out those who are openly prejudiced against other people because they are from another race. Policymakers in the government should keep in mind the interests of minorities, to include opportunities for them to live comfortably in society.
After the outbreak of the Coronavirus, there have been increased cases of racial discrimination against people of Asian origin. They have been subjects of offensive language in media reports and social media, as well as from politicians. Some have also encountered physical abuse, bullying and threats, which have been linked to the virus. By April, an Asian American group against racism reported having received over 1500 cases of racist attacks, with at least 125 of them being physical. This mistreatment has been attributed to the fact that the coronavirus originated from China. However, this should not be used as an excuse to discriminate against everyone who is of Asian descent. This illustrates negative the role of majorities to protect minority groups. People should refrain from carrying out any form of mistreatment against Asian Americans. Such actions should be condemned by leaders and the government.
