Movie Review: Impact of Food Inc.
Food, Inc. is a documentary that offers an investigative view of the American agricultural and food production system. Robert Kenner, the filmmaker, raises a lot of ethical questions brought about the industrialization of the food business. The film insights into the corporate monopolies that control the agricultural system with laws backing up their unethical practices that comes with social, environmental, and health costs. It, however, does not leave the consumers out of blame since society acts as a market with high demand for cheap fast foods keeping these businesses growing. Consumer blindness has led to this growing cycle of unhealthy eating, with more effects on health and their daily lifestyles. The documentary explores two vital points that the public can adopt to alter their lifestyles: eating more organic food and avoiding Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO).
Eating more organic foods and avoiding GMOs should be an adopted regular trend. Organic foods are produced by farming methods that depend on maintaining ecological balances and naturally occurring biological processes. Genetic medication has led to sick animals, environmental degradation, and tainted unhealthy foods for quick profits. The film showcases the growth of chicken and cows to feed the mass using corn and the unsafe practices in the slaughterhouses. There are more giant chickens, perfect pork chops, and tomatoes that do not go bad in the stores. It brings about the growth of a new strain of E.coli, a very harmful bacteria. The death of a young boy in the feature of personal stories outlines the genuine emotion behind ecoli outbreaks and the need for food safety. A revolution towards the consumption of organic foods can be adapted individuals can choose organic foods that are in season and read labels in the grocery store to see the kind of preservatives and ingredients added in the products. Most people are facing obesity; a higher level of diabetes among adults, they are more tired from the unhealthy foods they consume and facing slow deaths from their degenerating bodies. Though many consumers are unable to keep up with the high cost of organic foods as compared to snacks and fast meals, the health benefits are worth it in the long run.
In conclusion, the film is an essential eye-opener to the public; it gives them hope of changing things. The public can influence governmental policies for the interest of consumers. The consumers can also adapt better living lifestyles to demand better, as it happened in the tobacco industry. The movie has made an impact and will make me more conscious about the food choices I make.
