Music-Identity-Values- Tempo-Harmony

Numerous scholars across the divide in this field generally agree that music, when watched and listened to, has a potent impact on an individual. The significance of music stretches from culture, personal identity to beliefs, ethnicity, and values. It is emotive, telling a story, sharing ideas with the larger society, as well as acting as a revealing cultural language. With this in mind, it suffices it to say that music resonates with my beliefs, identity, and values ingrained in me from a personal perspective. From an early age, I have been intrigued by the rock genre of music. This genre entails excellent songs such as the Jonas Brothers’ “Roller Coaster,” that resonates so well with my life’s story in that it touches on the highs and lows that my sisters and I have gone through and how we never really gave up. The song is one I closely identify with, as it helped me during anxiety periods in high school.

So many persons today find the song “Roller Coaster” very relatable. Personally, the song virtually speaks the story of my life. It highlights the challenges and victories we went through, going through these stages like a roller coaster and all the turns. It potently points to my life whereby in the lines “It was fun when we were younger,” Brothers (2019) brings to mind memories from my childhood, which was graced by my two sisters who made my experience worthwhile. At times, I recall that life got difficult to the point that my thought was there was no way that we could extricate ourselves from the brunt of the challenges we were going through. The lines in the song, “We were up and down and barely made it over,” put my situation into words in a beautiful way. However, when I look at the line, “we found better days,” evidently proves that something that can be found, or something significant that can change one’s life may happen. All we have to do is stay strong because as much as riding the roller coaster has bumps and curves, you learn a lot about life and people along the way, and in the end, you would do it again.

Timbre

In the song “Roller coaster,” the timbre of the music is well-balanced, in that when one listens to it singing, both the bright and warm qualities in the song can be perceived. For instance, the higher overtones in the song, “A Million Dreams,” the higher overtones gives room for the projection of the voice in the lie, ” ‘Cause every night I lie in bed…,” Lyrics (2018). However, the warm tones, on the other hand, increase contrast in making the tone’s beautiful quality. The warm tones have, in some way, reflected my personality in that it soulfully evokes the emotions of sticking together as a family and go through challenges together.

Texture

The texture of the song A million dreams is homophonic, having a melody and coupled with an accompaniment, including instruments. For instance, in this song, the lead singer is accompanied by various instruments such as the drum and the piano. Listening to the instruments gave me the strength and comfort to handle the anxiety that curtailed my comfort throughout my stay in high school.

In summary, this assignment has provided an insight into the power of music. Without a doubt, it plays a crucial role in informing and has the ability to influence an individual’s thinking, actions, and behavior. The significance in music frequently carries messages that can be used to shape an individual’s morals and even make him/her a better person.
