My New vs, Legacy Media

Media plays an important role in our lives today. Certainly, I cannot avoid it because through media, I get informed about the latest events in the contemporary world as well as entertainment. Notably, my trends on media consumption are greatly dependent on the content media of such as information, entertainment and networking. My analysis of media consumption trends are explained three-fold:

My New vs, Legacy

Amazingly, there is a sharp dichotomy of time allocation spent between cable programs and hard copy media(Legacy) vs the streamed and internet-based platforms (New media). New media accounted for the lion’s share of time I spend on media consumption averaging at 4hrs 33 min of the total daily consumption of 6hr 50min against the traditional media averaging 2hrs 24 minutes a day. I spent a great deal of time in new media both for entertainment and information because of the flexibility and convenience it comes with it then the legacy media. For instance, new media offers a variety of options on content at a lower cost than legacy media that is finite and time-consuming.  For instance, it costs more to consume hard copies of newspapers and magazines than when you have digital newsprints available from internet sources. Consequently, the convenience of new media automatically translated more on-time allocation than the traditional media. On a certain occasion, slightly more time reflected on legacy media than new media when I need to retrieve information relating to a specific job advertisement.

 

Types of content

Importantly, I spent a considerable amount of time-consuming new media content than the traditional, given the evidence from the activity log. Of the total time spent on new media, entertainment stands out the most in terms of the content type. I preferred the internet for entertainment, especially streaming online movies and TV series than on CD and real-time cable programs. I found more entertainment options coupled with convenience on online platforms as compared to traditional media. For instance, there more archives in streaming websites such as U Torrent and the diversity of genres. When comparing real-time platforms against social media for entertainment, once more, social media edges out traditional media. Social media offer more convenience and variety of fashion and entertainment and thus took a slightly more share in term of entertainment. However, the scenario would change when I would want to multitask, especially when working out in the gym or doing cleaning in the house. I would prefer to play real-time radio entertainment or play from CD storage.

Media representation

Stereotyping of gender and class struggle is conspicuous in most media content. This means that most male-dominated roles were more highlighted than the counterpart. More males occupied the most prestigious roles in society, thereby exposing anomaly the society. Moreover, the media valued high-end premises and lifestyle than it would air on low-class spheres.

Reaction

The tracking of my media consumption was experiential and Informative. I am made part of what I consume and think since media accounts a greater percentage of my time. Media helps shape opinion on various aspects of my life, such as fashion. For instance, the latest senses of fashion are updated in most real-time and social media platforms and need to conform to the latest lifestyle may arise. I didn’t expect this kind of a revelation because I have learnt how information influences my choices and how I can manage my time.
