Nurses’ Self-evaluation and Self-assessment

Every nurse in the state is expected to deliver high-quality services by identifying their duties and responsibilities. Self-assessment and self-evaluation, besides the job descriptions, are essential guiding tools that give the practising nurses direction in the field (Elhami et al., 2018). The tools help a nurse to identify the strengths, their weaknesses and how they can improve it, and what they can do beyond their powers anything related to nursing. Moreover, these tools determine if one is to be promoted or not, and also it determines the competency level of the nurse.

Self-assessment is a tool which helps in identifying the learning needs of the practising nurse. When the assessors determine the learning needs of the practising nurses, they look for ways to fill in the gaps; hence, improving the nursing competency (Elhami et al., 2018). Challenges students pass through is essential in identifying the learning needs and looking for ways to address them through self-assessment. Self-assessment also helps nurses to know their strengths and what they can do beyond their power, and in this way, their competency increase and offers high-quality services.

Self-evaluation of a nurse involves highlighting the positive changes to the field, accomplishments and not forgetting to mention the shortcomings. Self-evaluation is all about being honest with oneself, and this way, the practising nurse can know the areas which need improvements and take the necessary step to correct the same. Moreover, self-evaluation helps one to list life career goals that one wants to achieve in future, and therefore, hard work in the field helps in the improvement of the nursing competency. When the competency is high, patients get high-quality services hence creating satisfaction to them (Elhami et al., 2018). In the course, I think the use of information technology in managing knowledge, communication and facilitation of decision making in nursing practice is covered. It is because self-evaluation and assessment require effective communication and making informed decisions in the field.

In conclusion, self-assessment and evaluation is interdependent and therefore, it should be adopted in not only the nursing field but also in other areas like education.  When a nursing practitioner has a sense of direction in the duties and responsibilities required of him or her, they tend to work hard to achieve their goals. Therefore, the importance of direction has to be instilled earlier during nurses’ training through self-evaluation and assessment to be maintained.
