Leaders practicing servant leadership and who have a strong comprehension of their personal leadership traits can successfully lead others and navigate the unique challenges of nursing and healthcare in many ways. It is important noting that such leaders are characterized by humility, proficiency in personal ability, authenticity, and integrity, and they prefer staying within the rules. Doing so indicates that such leaders can lead themselves well, becoming ambassadors and role models for their followers. As a result, followers become inspired to imitate their leaders’ behavior and become servant leaders themselves by applying similar behavioral values as their leaders. This would ultimately contribute to navigating the unique challenges that are part of nursing and healthcare, resulting in attaining the higher purpose vision. For instance, in one of my practices, a nurse duty came to the nurse manager, NM, complaining about a scheduling error. Upon having a discussion, the NM realized that the error would add extra work to the nurse on top of her usual duties.  The NM comprehended the nurse’s frustrations, and he decided to help the nurse complete the extra work imposed on her by working in partnership with all the parties required. That was a demonstration of servant leadership and understanding of personal leadership traits that helped navigate the challenge resulting from the error.

Meanwhile, by understanding themselves and practicing servant leadership, leaders can easily identify followers exhibiting better abilities than them in given situations. Therefore, the leaders can allow the followers to fill different roles relevant to their talents to help an organization navigate different challenges. Recognizing followers by their talents and allowing them to exercise their abilities increases their self-esteem and makes them feel appreciated, inspiring them to continue being lead by the leader. For example, there was a time I was working as an intern in a certain hospital, and it happened that the CEO of the hospital was just posted in the facility and was totally new to the hospital routines. I was pleased that the CEO allowed his assistant to lead him as he tried to acclimatize with everything in the hospital. By doing so, the leader exhibited servant leadership and an understanding of his personal leadership traits.
