  Nursing Admission Essay

When I was a teenager, my best friend Angela was involved in an accident. For one week, Angela was in the Intensive Care Unit. After Angela came from surgery, I noticed the nurses worked around the clock to ensure she was recovering. When Angela got discharged from the Intensive Care Unit to the patient ward, the nurses ensured that Angela got the care she required to recover completely. During the one month that Angela stayed in the hospital, I noticed that nurses were a vital part of her journey to recovery. Based on what I observed, I developed a passion for nursing. Nursing is a crucial element of the health sector. Nurses are the primary caregivers who help patients on their paths to recovery. Nurses are known for their compassion and dedication towards the recovery of patients. Also, nurses take care of the community at large by conducting public health. I want to further my education in nursing and use my experience and knowledge to impact on the health sector. With a master’s degree in nursing, I will not only safeguard public health but also dedicate my time to the sick and suffering in society.

When my friend Angela got discharged from the hospital, she still needed help moving around. Therefore, fascinated with the nursing profession, I took charge of taking care of Angela. I ensured she took her medicine at the indicated time, and I accompanied her for physical therapy. Although I was not a professional nurse, I consider my experience with Angela, my first experience in caregiving. My passion for nursing grew because, even when I got tired from taking care of Angela, I was still determined to ensure Angela got the care she needed to recover. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, once said, “Wise and humane management of the patient is the best safeguard against infection.” Thus, I became determined to take care of patients to prevent further harm to their health.

I consider nursing a calling because of the nature of the job. Some hospitals are understaffed, and as a result, nurses have to work overtime. However, regardless of the strenuous work environments, nurses are compassionate enough to execute their work duties. Although I have continually taken up challenges without fear, I have empathy for the suffering of pain and suffering of patients. I am confident that with a master’s degree, I will have more skills to provide the comfort needed by patients even under strenuous conditions.

Over the years, in my experience as a nurse, I have developed communication skills that are fundamental in nursing. Since nurses are primary caregivers, they need to have excellent speaking and listening skills. Based on the feedback of the patients, the nurses can provide adequate care to patients. Furthermore, when some patients are in pain, they cannot communicate effectively with health personnel. Therefore, nurses need communication skills to help such patients. Moreover, nurses are required to ensure that their patients are understood by everyone else, including doctors and families. Whenever patients are unable to communicate, nurses can anticipate their needs and communicate on their behalf.

I understand that nurses should be flexible and quick to respond. Most health care work is based on sudden incidences, and nurses must be flexible and quick to respond to emergencies. In the past, I have worked in emergency settings and maintained a calm head under strenuous working conditions. I believe that my ability to work under pressure will improve due to the training received when acquiring a master’s degree.

In conclusion, nursing is my calling and passion. I am determined to safeguard, promote, and improve health for all people. Despite the strenuous working conditions, I believe that the sick deserve the best care to aid in recovery. Upon my admission, I will work tirelessly to impact positively on the caregiving sector.
