Nursing Subculture
The nursing field involves several details that are only known by nurses. A subculture exists in nursing that differentiates it from other professions. Nursing is identified using its unique language, fashion trends, as well as the perception of the world. A participant observer can identify most of the details associated with nursing. For example, the feelings of nursing when taking care of patients may form a significant part of the nursing profession. Moreover, the specialization that individuals take in the nursing field is affected by several factors, which may interest an observer. Engaging several nurses are essential in getting most of the unknown facts about nursing.
I met one of my friends during working hours and asked for some information. The experience working in the field, as well as information from other sources, had it that need patients had a unique problem. Since staffs were present most of the times, needy patients have been blamed for being lazy and that that do less than they should do. The dependency of needy patients seems to be a burden to the staff, and most of the team feel that needy patients should be compelled into doing most of their duties. Also, I needed to know more about the nursing subculture and the differences between nursing and other professions. The response obtained, however, appeared to be against the prior knowledge.
As a nurse, having a negative perception of patients is unprofessional. Also, the classification of patients as needy is not allowed since it may affect service delivery to the patients. Therefore, the claim that some patients are needy is unethical, and no professional nurse would be willing to act against the code of ethics. The issue of subculture is real. Nurses have a unique language that differentiates them from other professionals.
Moreover, the similarity in character traits of nurses appears in other professions too. The fact that nurses stay together for a long time could be the reason why most of their traits are similar. People who stay together copy traits from one another and end up showing the same traits. However, additional research can be done to assess whether other factors are responsible for the similarity in traits.
I meet another nurse and her facial expression has some hidden information. I however come to the conclusion that she is one of the exceptions in the nursing career like any other profession. According to the nurse, nursing is a subculture and differs significantly from other professions. However, some exceptions happen in a nursing group like in any other profession. For example, some nurses are lazy and leave most of the work to other nurses. Also, most nurses deviate from the norms of the nursing group in search of attention and do not conform to the subculture. Apart from the exceptions, nursing is a subculture that believes in the operation of a group at the expense of an individual.
Nursing is organized as a subculture where group work is valued over individual efforts. Norms are always created with the idea of group work in mind. Nursing ‘speaks’ in a unique voice that is recognized by everyone in the group. Moreover, the group believes in a set of imposed norms that are accepted by the whole group. Although the norms may not be morally right, the main concern is the acceptance of the norms by everyone in the group. The nurses do correction services in the nursing sector, and no room is left for personal judgements.
The operation of nursing as a subculture goes beyond the information available to the public. Individuals in other professions believe in personal efforts where team efforts are inefficient. However, the nursing profession does not leave room for personal efforts. The opinions of a group are always accepted as the correct cause of action. For example, the group chooses the right style of dressing for the profession. A fellow nurse can tell their counterpart when they need new sneakers. Generally, the nursing group believes in uniform dressing style, and no individual is allowed to come up with their dressing styles.
The nursing subculture is, however, associated with hypocrisy. Most of the actions of the nurses are a contrast to what they do outside the facility. For example, nurses will come up with critical norms and later use them against some of their own. The power given to the norms of the nursing group works against the minority in the groups. Also, the nursing subculture creates several subcultures according to the specializations involved. Different specialties have different traits.
In sum, engaging several nurses is essential in getting most of the unknown facts about nursing.
