Occupational Safety
From sports ground, home to work, we have all been involved in unexpected events that result in injuries or damage to properties (Industrial Safety 1). Conversely, in all these cases, we might be aware of or the causes of accidents or not. Therefore, in examining the factors behind these events, the video “What Causes Accidents – Safety Training Video – Preventing Accidents & Injuries” highlights the two major causes of accidents (Safety Memos 00:00:20-00:04:22). The piece also narrows down to the human behaviors that contribute to accidents. From the video, we learn that people cause accidents because of carelessness, laziness, ignorance, not paying attention, sloppiness, and negligence (Safety Memos 00:00:31-00:00:39). Accidents also happen when two things are found unsafe acts and unsafe conditions. Unsafe conditions occur when there is a failure to identify control, remediate, or train properly against the hazards.
Some unsafe conditions are easy to spot while others need close inspection. People create the majority of hazardous conditions. However, nature can create the same conditions but with plenty of signs and warnings. Conversely, the hazardous conditions created by humans are hard to find. The video is also important because we learn that it is often difficult to foresee every unsafe situation or potential hazard. However, training, constant vigilance, and hazard awareness can prevent the vast majority of incidents and fatalities. The piece also helps us understand the causes and behaviors that can reduce the frequency and severity of accidents. Thus, the video intends to make people safer by creating awareness of danger.
“The Baltimore laundry mutt demolition oops” video is about a demolition process that created another accident (Trakhman 00:00:07-00:00:52). The Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development was required to bring down one building because it was not safe due to signs of structural instability. However, during the process, they accidentally demolished an adjacent building. Therefore, through the video, we learn that an accident occurred and resulted in damage to property. While the leading cause of the accident is unknown, we can argue that the contractor did not follow the safety rules and procedures, thus causing an accident. The contractor also failed to recognize hazards. By failing to be aware of the working condition, the contractor was unable to prevent an accident. The video also brings out the element of unseen hazards and unsafe acts. The workers are wearing some of the safety gear, but they are unaware of health hazards. Though exposed to asbestos and gypsum dust, they do not have masks. With no safety equipment to control risks, we learn that the Baltimore City Department of housing has failed to provide a safe working environment.
The video Osha Nightmares Compilation is about videos on occupational safety. The piece highlights some of the risky behaviors, accidents, and decisions on construction sites. Equally, it shows how to improve workplace safety by using protective gear. By watching the video, we learn the importance of following safety rules and procedures. For example, the fifth clip showed the importance of a safety harness by saving the two men from death or severe injury when the beam caused their scaffold to collapse (Clip’wreck 00:00:50-00:00:57). Equally, with this example, we learn why emergency systems are installed for workers working at heights. Safety regulations also win when the worker protects himself from the arc flash and blast by wearing gloves, a face shield, and other PPE (Clip’wreck 00:00:29-00:00:32). Convincingly the video is used to teach people about occupational safety. By adhering to safety rules and procedures, we prevent accidents from happening. On the contrary, the reverse happens if we fail to follow the safety procedures.
