Occupational safety and health
Occupational safety and health have been the core of academic focus for a long time (Hassan, 2018). This course’s main objective is to develop a foundation for employees’ safety, health, and welfare in the workplace. To achieve this objective, one must know their career goals, learning strategies and manage time well.
When I first began the course, my career goal was to ensure that I could teach employees in varying workplaces about their health and safety. This goal would be achieved by offering training and education on risks that employees can encounter in their workplaces and avoid. I also had the vision of performing and teaching necessary first aid procedures to workers. At present, my goal has not changed; instead, it has been enriched with more ground information that I have learned through this first year. This program has increased my knowledge and experience in occupational safety and health in the workplace. I have learned about various workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and how to control various workplace hazards. I have also learned how to establish a conducive work environment for workers’ health. My mentors have motivated me to embrace this course and everything that comes with it. Another program that I plan to enroll in the future is Associate Science in Public Health. I think this will enhance my knowledge and expertise in the occupational health and safety profession.
As Newton (2017) emphasizes, effective learning styles are pertinent to this program’s success; good learning styles are necessary. Some styles I have adopted include visualization of what I have learned in class, group discussions, and revision of past work and tests. I believe that this approach has helped me to understand the course requirements and improve my awareness. With improved awareness, I am sure that my concern for safety around me has been rising. My view of routine activities around me has shifted to looking at them from a safety perspective. To further improve my knowledge, I need to engage with students in senior years to acquire more experience. I also need to read more online articles regarding general health and safety. It will broaden my knowledge and help me learn more. My family has also been a great motivation in my studies. My family members always provide me with an excellent environment to study. They usually engage me and help me develop good habits and time management to go through my learning process smoothly.
Time management is another essential component of this course. When I began this course, I developed a habit of accounting to do any coursework or activity. I created a timetable which helped me perform my tasks during specified times. Consequently, I realized how much time I saved for rest and refreshing up my mind. I realized that I spent most of my time reading and revising the tasks and tests. I did this mostly during the day and late at night. Later, I realized that I had strained myself excessively as I could engage in classwork for more extended periods without resting. I would later realize that the strain limited my productivity as most of my studying efficiency was way below optimal. To improve my productivity, I learned that I need to create more time to disengage my mind from too much classwork and enable my mind to accommodate more ideas quickly. From now on, I plan to develop a timetable that enables me to study more at night and generate more time during the day for me to do home chores and refresh my mind.
In conclusion, this course is essential for me to apply what I learn in the workplace. To be successful in this course, I have had to identify my career goals, study strategies, and time management. By periodically reflecting on such pertinent aspects of my learning, I will acquire full knowledge and experience to complete the course and impact my future workplace positively.
