Own Values and Beliefs.
Own values are people’s traits that drive them towards taking their actions. Values are someone’s perspective on whether an action is right or wrong. A belief on the other side is someone’s trust and confidence in the existence of something without an exact justification. When a person’s trust in the existence of something without proof grows within time, a value is generated. Values and beliefs lead to the generation of an attitude. An attitude is someone’s mental state towards another person or something which determines the decision made by the person in the current circumstance
Values and beliefs can either be positive or negative. The positive values and beliefs are the good traits someone possesses and is always directed to better wellbeing. For example, in interviews when an engaged couple is asked how they met each other, they will mention some aspects of good traits that attracted the other half (Beutler et al., 1979). Parents also struggle throughout their life intending to drive the positive values and beliefs into their children for the betterment of their future lives these values include honesty, loyalty, compassion, and respect.
On the other side, negative core values and beliefs the bad values that are mainly generated out of fear and insecurity. These values are generated when people’s behaviors are propelled by a strong desire to gain wealth or power and also egocentricity. These values are greed, selfishness, and egocentricity. These values may be created by different beliefs e.g. the world is always unfair hence only the strong people make it in life, a belief that someone is worthless, a belief that someone does not deserve anything better, and a belief that we should not trust any person in the current world.
According to the department concerned with children’s rights in Britain, British values are a set of laws that are created to ensure respect among individuals. It is backed up in the British constitution under the Equality Act of 2010. The office stated that four major values are being upheld in Britain. These are the introduction of a voting system whereby citizens choose their leaders, implementation of regulations by the government that will shape people’s lives, freedom of the citizens, and respect amongst citizens without considering their religion (Davidsson et al., 1997).
According to British values, democracy should be prioritized to the citizens. People should be equally treated and every citizen should freely exercise his rights. The citizens are given the freedom to hold peaceful demonstrations when oppressed and every leader is accountable for his actions. Team meetings are legalized whereby upcoming issues are discussed by many people; everyone’s opinion is considered after which a decision is made after a careful analysis.
Justice is also applied at courts and every other government platform for the satisfaction of the citizens. Rules have been formulated which should be followed to create a safe and conducive environment for daily activities. The law has been set up not only for the leaders but also to safeguard the citizens from getting involved in illegal activities. These laws contain the steps to be followed when conducting different activities and also the repercussions of getting into activities that may harm the public.
The citizens are also expected to have it in mind that they are from different walks of life. The State has people with different faith and beliefs. The British values agitate for respect among the civilians regardless of the religion. Discrimination and prejudice should be kept out by the civilians and general unity should be embraced for the better functioning of the nation.
According to British values, every citizen is entitled to his rights. The citizens are expected to cooperate, making it easier for all of them to get access to their freedom. Every citizen is at liberty engage in the practices he wishes to only if it is legal. This can be ensured through mutual respect among people who may be working in a common firm and critical analysis of different activities in personal development.
Human nature is the individual characteristics that are believed to be possessed by human beings. These are the mental prepositions about something, feelings, and even how they respond to stimuli. The scientists and psychologists have worked tirelessly trying to examine human nature but fewer results have been yielded by their observance. Richard Dawkins, a scientist, concluded that in the human body, there exists a gene that carries along with selfishness. These genes are responsible for the human behavior of caring about himself only. This was backed up by Burton L. White, a child psychologist who examined some selfish traits in children that develop as they keep growing. William Graham Sumner sociologically concludes that human beings are generally selfish and corrupt in every part of the world. Thomas Harris also observed that human beings are fond of engaging in activities which he called original sin.
Human beings are always resistant to change. However, people’s values tend to change as they grow older. According to psychological research, human beings have unique values that keep fading as they grow older. People’s desire changes over time without their realization e.g. a child may aspire to become a pilot while still younger but over the years of education, he may end up being a high school teacher. The aspect of change is also seen in homosexual individuals who get married later and give birth to children just to meet the family’s expectations. Due to these changes, psychologists recommend people to try to understand their values at a younger age and try living by them. This helps generate a better and focused lifestyle. However, this should be applied to better values only which may have a positive effect on other people’s life.
People can use their values in helping others which in turn creates happiness for both the people under the practice. Everyone gets busy at some time but sparing some time just to accompany someone in need is a value that most people lack. The act of giving without expecting anything in return is a rare element in the current society.
Compassion, love, and care are the key values in this act. People help others with the belief that God blesses those who help the needy. There is also a belief that anything can happen to anybody hence one can never know what awaits him. Helping can be in the form of creating time just to stay with someone, offering monetary support, food donations and even helping at work. This can be applied through visiting the sick in the hospital and giving them food or company, caring for the aged, visiting the orphanage and giving food donations if possible, and even hanging out with the children in the orphanages just to ensure that they are not depressed.
The act of helping others is also beneficial to the helper which is an own motivation. Caring is contagious hence when someone is helped, it creates a sense in him that he also has to help another person in the same situation if he is capable. This trend continues and maybe one day it can get back to you. Helping others also reduces stress since you can share your problems with someone and maybe the solution you couldn’t get was right into someone’s head which you access as a result of the merciful act. It also helps someone know his worthwhile living hence motivation to both parties in the practice.
In conclusion, human values and beliefs are important when realized. People should be able to control their values for better living. Bad values should be abolished to prevent evil acts. Understanding people’s values are necessary because of its great benefit to society
