Participation Task 1

  1. Based on the talk by the Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, she was born in Bronx, New York. Her family was poor and wanted her to have a better life, which included. Thus the family had to move from the community to Yorktown Heights, the wealthy part in New York seeking better experience for their children (Garcia, 2009). Her first language was Spanish, while English was her home language. At the suburban schools in Westchester, life was challenging since her racial color was different, and she could speak two languages instead of one.
  2. Advocating for the inclusion of halal food in public schools’ cafeterias by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as it is within the right of the people, and the government has to ensure they are fulfilled. The same applies to concepts of bilingualism in that people, regardless of their origin, have the right to speak and be taught the language of their choice.
  3. In as much as the NYC teachers work as hard and are at least as skilled as suburban teachers. However, they face more challenges in terms of language to use, especially for foreigners. Right now, we are in a time of change (which started around 1960 and hasn’t stopped anywhere intelligent yet) that, in many ways, is dumbing down the populace of single language and adopting bilingual education.

People have the right to pursue education. The same applies to bilingual education since it forms the biggest part of nurturing students. These types of educational systems significant within this century since most students keep on forgetting their culture and try adapting to foreign cultures, so it is affecting their original culture. Reflection

If New York adopted a bilingual system, it would call for more linguistic involvement for the next generations. The move alone would inspire a new wave of different languages taking over the minds of developed young men and women who will make America a great country generation after generation. Bilingual education can (and will) open up more doors for more languages to be taught at more practical levels. I find that learning a second language, and using it extensively, strongly helps a learner understand his or her primary language. A second language also helps us understand varying perspectives on the world, which can be acquired in no other way (Garcia, 2009). And it also makes the best use of the most valuable resource in our minds. Anything that expands our mental abilities is of great importance. Speaking different languages is advantageous in the sense that you’ll get to understand foreign books and reading materials better, which means you will also learn more. But this aside, other benefits make the skill highly invested upon by different people, especially by the young ones. First off, it opens you to more business opportunities.

Reflection

When a person learns one language only within the 21st century, it implies that the educational system of the state is poor, and it will impact the social, educational, and economic graph. Thus a person must get to know various languages, and it is through the institutional offering bilingual teaching that the children become diversified. As per the research conducted, it was noted that students who find it difficult to understand the syllabus tend to have difficulties during examinations. Thus most of the students, in the end, find themselves unable to get familiarized with the English language. This creates the need for adapting the bilingual one. Bilingual educational initiatives are many making it difficult to understand the ideal one. However, what one needed to do is observe the characters. A syllabus comparable to covered material within English has to be in the classroom. Additionally, providing instructions has to be through English due to English being the only subject taught.

I would advocate for bilingual education. Today, many companies are already expanding their businesses around the world. This also increases the demand for professionals who are capable of speaking the local language of their target market. The more skilled you are in conversation, the higher your chance of landing in a translation company job, which, of course, pays higher. I hereby appeal for the introduction of bilingual education in the NYC public school system as it will be of more benefit to New York.

  2. The proportion of programs available to English Language Learners in NYC are; English as a New Language, Transitional Bilingual Education, Dual Language, and Not Served/Not Reported.
  3. The boroughs with the largest proportion of dual language programs known as the best BE programs available to their students are English as a New Language. The distribution is not fair since English as a New Language has the largest value, and none of the other programs offer a competition. The ENL is served the best. The one not served best is Not Served/Not Reported.

Reflection

I think that the program of English as a New Language is mostly adopted. Cultural centers and community colleges should assume the task of helping heritage speakers maintain their proficiency through expanded offerings in language and area studies, and that they should receive public funding to do so because the country has a vested interest in their success (Garcia, 2009). Bilingual education is the most preferred since in as much as it is a challenging program in the process of administering mostly for cultural and political reasons, but if given the chance of functioning, it will be of much success to the society. Most of the bilingual educators fail to understand the reason as to why it has not been implemented. I know there are many attacks on the initiative, but it is not due to its ineffectiveness, it is from people within the society who are against a pluralistic society that comprises of different ideas and languages.

I would suggest bilingual education. The child who has embraced bilingual education will be able to move freely across the two cultures. As a way of maintaining the culture as well as to making the child prominent, the bilingual has to be added to the native English as it increases the cultural growth, society as well as the entire condition of the state.
