Performing arts convocation 2018
On September 4th, 2018, a performing arts convocation took place at the murphy fine arts center. The conference mainly held to give details concerning “Antigone in Ferguson.” Antigone in Ferguson is a project formed by the theater of war productions, which contains dramatic readings by celebrated actors of Sophocles. The live choir includes the youths, police officers, activists, teachers, and disturbed citizens from New York City, St. Louis, and Missouri. The Antigone discussion mainly based on social justice and racial concerns. The play in the conference highlighted important information that I didn’t know.
At the conference, Antigone was worried about the death of Michael brown in 2014. The Antigone was of the idea that their brother deserved a proper burial, but the Creon, the king of Thebes, opposed the idea of a proper burial. Creon said that Michael Brown did not deserve a burial and therefore thought that his body should be left to rot and eaten by vultures. Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American man, was shot dead by Darren Wilson, a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. His body was left lying on the ground for several hours before the government could take any action. That was the most disturbing part of the death of Michael Brown.
The principal attendants of the Morgan university performing arts convocation 2018 were the Antigone in Ferguson. The Antigone in Ferguson performed the play about the killing of Michael Brown by a police officer. They debated on if Michael brown was supposed to receive a proper burial or not. The students of the Morgan university were also the principal attendants to the conference. There was a Greek choir performing the chorus by Philip Woodmore, which happened to be gospel chorus.
The convocation was so informative, especially to me, as a student of the humanities course. It teaches a lot about racism and social justice. The government should take immediate action on situations such as the death of Michael brown even though he was an African American man. The decisions of whether to bury him or not should be based on the color rather than treat all the citizens equally. Social justice involves the fair distribution of wealth, privileges, and opportunities in society. Everyone in the community, whether black or white, deserves a proper burial. The chorus in the Antigone in Ferguson that used in describing the play happened to be gospel. The choir was written by Philip Woodmo
