Persive Reading
The second sex is a book written by Makeda Haileselassie, where essentialist Simone de Beauvoir argues that women have long been subject to discrimination and inequality in the society that is primarily dominated by the men’s authority. De Beauvoir gauges that the role of women in society has been neglected because men have taken full control of everything. In my opinion, I agree with Simone because women have not yet realized themselves and not yet know that they can change society.
As per De Beauvoir argument, a woman is perceived to be a man’s extension and dependant in everything, and due to the thin line of thinking, the women lag and subject to men’s authority. “women lack concrete means for organizing themselves into units which can stand face to face with the correlative unit. They have no past, no history, no religion of their own” (301), as argued by De Beauvoir. He also states that “ they live dispersed among the males, attached through residence, housework, economic condition and standing to certain men” (De Beauvoir 301).
The role of women in society has been neglected because men have taken full control of everything since they have not yet realized themselves and not known that they can change society. Therefore Simone is right to say that women have not realized themselves since, in my view, they are reluctant to fight their place and positions in society. They have also allowed themselves to be undermined in everything thing they do, and therefore feel they have no much value in society. In conclusion, I would like to urge women to stand on their feet and fight for their position in the community, and with that, they will achieve their goals and respect from their societies. With doing so am sure everyone one will side with me that women had not realized themselves and not known that they could bring a significant change in the society
